Although it was clear he had left the children alone, I was the one reported to the authorities for child neglect. Under Massachusetts law, the mother had sole responsibility for the care of her children.

This right here. These are the parts of this book that I believe make it such an important read for 'women's studies" students and feminists. This was not so long ago. It's both refreshing in showing that we've come a long way, but also reminds me what a long way we've yet to go. Because I think women are often still unfairly burdened with having the sole responsibility of caring for the children and add on to that nowadays that many mothers are also tasked with being the sole provider as well.
