it was ok

This book was infuriating, it wasn't all bad, but it had moments when I wanted to throw it across the room.
It starts out so good, the concepts and ideas are interesting, the writing is well done and then... After that... My brother has a line that perfectly described my reading experience and it goes like this: "Things go up! Then things go down!"
How can the story fall so far is beyond me, but it becomes evident when you start thinking about it.

How can the story fall so far is beyond me, but it becomes evident when you start thinking about it.
Magic had little to no place being in there and the book was most enjoyable when it wasn't.
The world building is just barebones and the author treating us with zero confidence to understand the "SUBTLE" (she bashes your head with them) themes of her story is close to zero.

The characters... Oh the characters...
Starting off, the villan was okayish, not the greatest, but he did his job.
Robin Swift started out lovable and somewhat endearing, but then he quickly became quite the opposite as the story progresses.
Victoire is straight up a merry sue.
And the others aren't worth really talking about, with ONE BIG EXCEPTION!
Letty... Oh Letty...
If you look past the author's clear agenda and just analyze her character. She may be one of the most good characters in this book, at least initially, before the author has to push her in the ground and throw mud at her.
She, at times, feels like a punching bag and somehow she is still the bad person.
There is even a moment when the book almost acknowledges this, but then does an 180 and points it out how really evil she was! (Rolls eyes over)

The more I've started to get to the ending, the more I've started to skim over lines and then pages. I no longer really cared. Then I looked at the author again and realized that she is the same one that wrote the Poppy War and then it hit me. She rewrote the Poppy War with an academia setting! You get the same vibes, more or less same message...

I think I am forever done with this author. She clearly has an agenda and pushes "The Message" and you know what, fine, maybe she suffered directly at the hands of "the evil race", but she refuses to be any better and her work clearly shows that.

Whew... what a book...

To start off, this book is oozing with passion and this is really conveyed through the overly elaborate descriptions and intricacies that this book displays, but at the same time, it is also it's biggest undoing.
The reason for my high score is that passion that was displayed here and I hope the next instalments get better.
I'd say that 20% of this book is quite epic in scale and in conflict and it does an awesome job of reeli ...more
