"But of bliss and glad life, there is little to be said, before it ends; as works fair and wonderful, while still they endure for eyes to see, are their own record, and only when they are in peril or broken for ever do they pass into song."

"Then Fëanor laughed as one fey, and he cried, 'None and none! What I have left behind I count now no loss; needless baggage on the road it has proved. Let those that cursed my name, curse me still, and whine their way back to the cages of the Valar!'"

It's been half a decade and I still don't know whether to pity or to hate Fëanor.

“See, half-brother!” he said. “This is sharper than thy tongue. Try but once more to usurp my place and the love of my father, and maybe it will rid the Noldor of one who seeks to be master of thralls.”

That picture....😮😮😁😁!!!!

BEAUTIFUL, right?! One of the biggest reasons I love The Silm so much is because the fandom has so many talented writers, artists, and musicians in it!

Right now I feel the urge to go FIND THAT BOOK ASAP! AND READ IT!! (and then look at all the artwork!)

Yes, you need it! Need it, need it! 😍😂 I remember spending my class time as a middle school student just reading Tolkien Gateway articles on the Princes of the Noldor and staring at lots and lots of art. It was so worth it!

Yes! I know I do!!😊😊😊 (Actually I'm pretty sure if we do have a copy - somewhere in storage - it's my dad's copy. So if I found it, it would probably go back on his shelf! Great excuse to but my own to read!)

I also want to make sure I find one with a really pretty cover!

That's great!! Do you remember which version you have? Like what the coloring or the cover art is like?

From what I remember, (packing it up about 2 years ago XD) it's a small paperback with a mostly white cover. There could have been mountains on the cover and there was potentially a person on a horse and some celtic looking know designs at the edge? (racking my brain here, sorry!)

I looked online at cover pictures and none of them match what I am thinking....so maybe that book wasn't even The Silm! 🙄😥😥😮

Hmm, I'm not sure about that! It was mostly all white? I think most of the copies of The Silm are darker. This is the closest I can think of: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Yeah. From what I recall, the background was very light. I'm starting to think it wasn't Silm after all. 😣 Maybe Lost Tales? (Which I already have. Oh well!)

Awww. Well, if you want a good copy of The Silm that's not too expensive, there's one of a guy throwing this shiny thing into the sea. Heh, no spoilers. That one is illustrated and pretty nice!

YES YES YES I DO! (jumping up and down!!) Where is it? (The ones I saw on Amazon are expensive!)

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

*still trying to figure out why a guy would be throwing a shiny thing into the sea!*

Ahh, I just realized it's not on Amazon anymore! I know that edition was published in the late 1900s, so it's definitely out of print now.

The edition I use for reading is this one below. The quality isn't super good (mine is super worn!), but at least it's not a mass market paperback and this way I don't have to worry about ruining it.

Otherwise, I would keep an eye on the different editions. Amazon prices fluctuate, and sometimes books in Very Good condition are listed at a great price.

The one I was originally talking about, though, is this one.

The beginning has definitely grown on me since the first time I read it. You didn't like the Quenta very much? That section has always been my favorite.
