In a silent age, many sombre moons ago, actors didn't really lean into ‘fashion’. They wanted the craft to speak for itself. Then actors like Jacob Elordi came along, and the red carpet felt like that part in Kill Bill where Uma Thurman blinks and the world goes from black and white to full colour, but just with less blood and screaming. The suits are Valentino, and sick. The coats are big, and all ‘90s procedural courtroom thriller. And, really, it’s an elevated version of what we all want to wear all day every day.

That sort of style isn't so out of reach. Last night, Jacob Elordi did the late-night TV circuit (it was the appropriately shouty TONIGHT SHOW! STARRING JIMMY FALLON! if you were wondering) in a polo sweater many guys think about almost as much as the Roman Empire. It was boxy. It finished on the waist without going full TikTok cropped. It's the piece with the flexibility of a Russian gymnast; it goes with jeans, it goes with shorts, it goes with suits, it goes with everything – and it's on sale for just less than £200.

From luxury French label Ami, this polo is a signature piece of the eternally ascendant label. It's minimalist, but without the usual po-facedness that comes from minimalist brands. Instead, creative director Alexandre Mattiussi has forged something that feels preppy and playful, but deeply Parisian; self-seriousness that's prone to the occasional wink. Plus, it's wearable. You'll have seen Ami's heart logo on more than a few knits in pubs where first dates are rife.

Now, it's on Elordi, who outed himself as a Hollywood fashion truther in his GQ cover story last year. “I never bought a bag,” he said on the topic of his little Bottega Veneta Andiamos. “Maybe that should be something that is exposed about Hollywood. All these people think, I wish I had that lifestyle. I mean, yes, to get them for free – that’s great. What a great lifestyle. But people that have all this money aren’t spending it. You just get sent stuff. It blows my mind." So, chances are, this polo sweater was a product of the same designer-to-celebrity pipeline. But at that sort of sale price, a lot more people can get involved.
