Guy Ritchie is back. Yes, we know it was only a few months ago that he directed Disney's live-action remake of Aladdin, but now he's really back – back to making the darkly humoured gangster flicks that made him a household name in the first place. Think Snatch, think Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels, and forget the family-friendly fun of his foray into the Disney empire. Ritchie's latest film, The Gentlemen, is a return to his roots and, from what we can tell from its trailer, he's not holding back.
Who’s in the cast?
As you'd expect, Ritchie has enlisted a stellar line-up of actors to star in The Gentleman, including Matthew McConaughey, Colin Farrell, Henry Golding, Charlie Hunnam, Jeremy Strong and Jason Wong. The most surprising additions to the cast, however, are Hugh Grant and Downton Abbey's Michelle Dockery, who are both taking on roles that are unlike anything we've seen them do before. Grant even grows a beard and puts on a cockney accent to embody his role. There's a first time for everything.
What is it about?
Drugs, gangs and guns, basically, but if you want the long version, The Gentleman follows drug lord Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey), whose vast weed empire is under threat from new rivals, whom we assume are led by Henry Golding's currently unnamed character. You should keep in mind, however, that there are a lot more characters involved in the plot and exactly how they fit into it remains unclear at the moment, but, as Grant's Fletcher says in the trailer, "There is a lot of money hanging in the balance."
When is it released?
The Gentleman is due to be released in cinemas on 1 January 2020.
