Any furniture piece can be emotive, but you and your bed should be in a committed long-term relationship. As the centrepiece of any sleep space, your bed – whether you’ve opted for an ottoman bed, divan base or a small double – is where you snuggle in for an early night, collapse after a stressful day, or enjoy comfy slumbers night after night. The importance of a good bed is not to be underestimated.
While you're choosing a high-tech hybrid mattress, cosy all-season duvet, or the best linen bedding to keep you comfortably cool (yet toasty warm when needed), you must get the foundations of a decent bed frame right, too. Make sure your double bed frame scores high on both form and function, whether you’re after an industrial-styled black metal frame, a sleek and stylish upholstered number with a buttoned headboard, a laid-back bohemian bed, or an ottoman storage bed with all its under-bed storage.
There are, of course, hundreds of double beds to choose from, with designs as diverse as their price tags, which is why we’ve snoozed, kipped, catnapped and REM’d our way through some of the best-selling to bring you our cream of the crop (the dream of the drop?) that guarantee some quality z's. These are our top picks for the best double beds, from space-saving to ones with more storage options than you’ll know what to do with.

How we test the best double beds: GQ's review process
For our GQ Recommends buyer's guides we try to test everything we select first hand, with our writers, testers and reviewers all taking it upon themselves to sleep and snooze on some of the best double beds out there to make sure we are selecting good quality and a good variety of options. In some cases, we've also headed to showrooms and warehouses to see the products first hand. Where we haven't been able to review the double beds we have recommended personally, we've taken into account the retailer, price, quality of materials used and the range of customisation and size options available. If that wasn't enough, GQ's Senior Commerce Writer, Daphne Bugler edits all of the interior buyer's guides we publish, bringing four years of experience covering GQ's interiors with her to ensure all the guides are recommending the best out there.
What is the difference between a divan bed and an ottoman bed frame?
If you're looking to maximise storage space in your bedroom, opting for a divan bed or an ottoman bed is a great idea, with both offering ample storage space beneath the bed. A divan bed typically has a wooden bed frame, covered with some level of padding and then upholstered in fabric. They often have drawers, come in several size options and they typically don't have headboards, enabling you to opt for no headboard, or pick a standalone option.
An ottoman bed meanwhile, usually comes with a headboard as part of the frame, they are normally upholstered and they usually come with piston assisted lift and close mechanisms that enable you to lift up the entire base to reveal a huge storage area below.
What should you consider when selecting a double bed?
There are a huge range of different double bed options to choose from so when you're deciding, you'll need to consider the style you might want and whether you need storage or not. If you don't need storage and you want to add a statement piece to your bedroom, you could consider a sleigh bed or an upholstered bed with an extravagant headboard.
If you do need storage, you'll want to look at an ottoman bed or divan base. You can read our round up of ottoman beds in a separate article if you want more options, and we also have an article on sofa beds if you're looking for a sofa bed that expands out to a double bed.
