The 1980s famously gets bit of a bad rep when it comes to clothing (and hair), but don't let that fool you into thinking this was some sort of decade that style forgot. While certain celebrities might have gone down the whole lame-and-spandex route, the most stylish men of the Eighties kept things far more tailored (albeit with a looser cut than perhaps we're used to today). Thanks to men like David Bowie, Bryan Ferry, Michael Jackson and Jean-Michel Basquiat, as well as films like Wall Street, dressing up in suits came back into style - and with this men like Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren and Gianni Versace became the most in-demand menswear designers of the decade. Tailoring was boxy and big-shouldered, often double-breasted and cut from dark coloured - generally pinstripe - fabric, worn with eye-catching ties and patterned shirts. As the decade found its stride, suits got brighter coloured and more causal - exemplified in American shows like Miami Vice and by British bands like Duran Duran (Exhibit A: the music video for "Rio").However, one of the biggest trends of the decade was the prep revival, seen on screen in films like The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller's Day Off - with seersucker, blazers and Varsity jackets once again becoming popular.
