Onitsuka Tiger takes Tokyo

The creative director of Onitsuka Tiger, Andrea Pompilio, puts sportswear front and centre as he closes Amazon Fashion Week Tokyo with a fashion show that’s about so much more than the sneakers When you think of Onitsuka Tiger you can’t help but think of the brand’s appearance in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill (2004), with the label’s iconic Mexico 66 style worn by “The Bride” played by Uma Thurman. This moment is something that Onitsuka Tiger’s creative director, Andrea Pompilio, is happy to revisit in his fashion collections for the brand. This season, a reinterpretation of the yellow tracksuit in sequins for both men and women brought a sense of playfulness to a rainbow-hued, co-ed show held during Amazon Fashion Week Tokyo. The fashion show, held in the auditorium of Waseda University, brought a youthful energy to the occasion, where models wore outfits influenced by all forms of sport, from football to tennis to skating – all things activewear were covered. The reinterpretation of key Onitsuka Tiger styles was evident throughout, from fabrication changes on sneakers to oversized logomania on sweats. These sweat suits in every colour came together for the finale of the show, when models gathered on stage in their matching gear. Since his debut for the brand in 2013, Andrea Pompilio has brought a distinctly Italian flair to the Japanese brand. Pompilio’s career has seen him working with brands such as Prada and Moncler before starting his own label in 2011. The result is a sports brand targeting the fashion market – interesting at a time when fashion brands can’t get enough of sportswear – and Onitsuka Tiger is doing what it does best.
