How to look as well groomed as Jonathan Bailey

You might know bright young British actor Jonathan Bailey best for his turns in Broadchurch and Doctor Who, but here at GQ we’re more concerned with how he comes to look so damn well groomed. Luckily for us, he reveals his routine...

The first thing I do in the morning is press play on my Bose II speaker. Music is the always first step and key for a vibey start to the day. I reckon I can be ready and out of the door within three songs.

I have no loyalty to toothpaste. As long as it’s fresh and minty I’m good to go. I’ll usually brush for a verse and a chorus. And maybe all the way to the bridge if it’s ahead of a night out.

My toothbrush is analogue all the way. There’s a supersonic Oral-B in the cabinet but I like an old-fashioned DIY to get a full clean. Firm bristles.

I’m filming a Netflix series called Bridgerton at the moment, which means I am at the mercy of some pretty heavy-duty period drama mutton chops. Luckily, Marc Pilcher – our amazing make-up designer – is in full control of my facial hair for the next six months. He shears me like a sheep. I don’t have to do anything, which is great as I hate shaving.

On my face it’s all about Cowshed. A cleanse, tone and moisturise always sets me up for the day. Also, Olay’s Regenerist Whip is great as it’s calm and mattifying and has SPF. Essential.

On my hair? Aesop always. I shampoo and condition every day and their Geranium Leaf Body Scrub makes you feel like a silky superhero.

And then I towel dry. My hair is currently longer than usual for filming and I find that shaking in a little bit of VO5 clay while it’s still damp gives it the right weight to fall cleanly. A blow-dry with no product leaves me looking like a Mongolian cushion.

Once you find the right barber, that special someone that you never knew but hoped existed, that you hear of in fairytales, the One, you keep hold of them and stay faithful. My barber is called Ash, who cuts at the Gielly Green boutique. Gradually, all my pals have committed to him and no one looks back. Merry Christmas, there’s my present to you all.

I never wear make-up actually. I used to play around with YSL Touche Éclat but I would end up looking like Morph.

Scrub-wise, the Cowshed Microdermabrasion Facial Scrub is great once, maybe twice a week.

I love a Flashpatch from Patchology. Rejuvenating eye gels really help for early starts and for evenings when feeling a bit dusty. Top tip: pop them in the fridge. They’ll pick up the scent of the leftover cheeses, sure, but you’ll be bright-eyed and sparkly for the whole day.
