The introduction of flexible, hybrid working patterns means working from home is going to be part of our working lives permanently – the quest for the best desk just got that much more urgent, in other words. Because while lounging on your sofa as you work certainly has its perks, having a dedicated computer desk or standing desk where you can set yourself up each day has a whole range of benefits, from helping you stay organised to allowing you to switch off in the evening as you physically move away from your desk and leave your job behind.
Creating a home office space with your own desk is also a great opportunity to show off a bit of your design flair and build an aesthetically pleasing area that you actually enjoy spending time in. Of course, we’re sure you love spending time in your bed or on the sofa, but those areas are normally associated with a more relaxed mindset. Investing in a desk can help you focus on being more productive, in the same way that moving to a physical office space might.
Whether you want something artistic and stylish or a practical option to fit into a smaller space or corner area, we’ve tracked down the best desks on the market right now from some of our favourite furniture stores. And if you’re looking for the perfect purchases to complement your new desk, head over to our office chair and desk lamp guides too, if you like.
Which desks are the best in 2024?
With plenty of storage for tech, trinkets, ornaments, and more, this functional desk crams plenty of space into a light and airy form factor. Ideal if you’re working with a smaller space and don’t want to overwhelm it, or if your interiors aesthetic sits somewhere in that happy space between “lightweight industrial chic” and “modernist cuboid utopia”.
Giving you the option to move between a seated and standing position, Flexispots’s standing desk is one of our favourites on the market for its ergonomic features. It breaks up the day, it helps your back, and it takes a bit of the sedentary boredom out of WFH life.
This rather unusual desk has standout styling, including a rounded rattan finish, and bright teal tabletop – all perfect for blending into bedroom offices without compromising its own unique style. And if you ever spend any time reading our shopping recommendations here at GQ, you know we’re, ahem, very partial to a good piece of rattan furniture, so we absolutely can’t resist this.

What style of desk is best for a home office?
In terms of design, there are near-infinite options out there waiting for your approval. And with design being subjective, there's no right or wrong answer. Having said that, there are a few basic things you'll want to take into consideration. The first of these is checking the dimensions of the desk to see if it will actually fit the space it's intended to live in. It's a basic step, but a crucial one nonetheless.
Next up, you'll want to consider how it will fit into your existing interior design. A classic hardwood desk is a fine thing to behold, but it might look out of place in an ultra-minimalist setup. Material, too, is crucial. Do you want something that can handle coffee spills, toddlers, cat visits and the occasional desk lunch? Then you'll want something hardy and easily wipeable.
Some desks also have built-in storage solutions like shelves and/or drawers. These can be particularly handy if you have extra items like printers and lamps that need room to breathe. Ultimately, you'll want to pick the best desk within your budget, that's in your style and suits your needs.
How we test desks
All of GQ’s interiors guides are written by our in-house team of contributing testers and experts, and are edited by Daphne Bugler, British GQ’s Senior Commerce Writer, who has been working at GQ for the past four years, and has written extensively about interiors since 2020. The team regularly talks to experts in a variety of interiors categories to better understand the products we write about and what we should be looking for.
When we choose desks, we are prioritising work – largely WFH life – though of course there is no reason why you couldn't use these desks for other things. We look at a range of prices to cater for all budgets, as well as different sizes and materials so that each desk will fit into a particular room or decorative scheme. We work closely with brands we know and trust to deliver good value for money. And, most of all, we pick the desks we covet for our own homes…
