Looking for the best ottoman bed? We don't blame you. You simply cannot have too much storage: bulky suitcases, extra bedding, last season’s winter coats, and boxes packed with cards, photos and mountains of memorabilia collected over the years… it all needs somewhere to live. But what’s even more satisfying than having ample storage in the home is having hidden storage; a place to put away our things in otherwise redundant areas – that empty space within the bed base being a prime example. Enter, the ottoman bed.
While some storage bed frames offer generous capacity with deep under-bed drawers, there’s nothing like an ottoman-style frame for a true space-saving solution. Thanks to their clever design, these lift-up frames give you the full length, width – and often impressive depth – of the bed to play with, whether a single ottoman bed, double ottoman bed or a king size ottoman bed. And with easy access and clever lift mechanisms, you can get creative in loading up your concealed storage space to the max.
Because of their functionality, most ottoman-style bed frames tend to be boxy, which lends itself to a clean-lined, contemporary look. More often than not, an ottoman bed is fully upholstered from top to toe with plush finishes like velvet fabrics, and without feet or legs so the frame sits practically flat on the floor. Of course, the bulk is offset with all that lovely storage space to fill up, which in turn, will give you a pleasingly clutter-free bedroom that has practicality at its heart.
There are some ottoman bed bases with legs too, making them look like a traditional bed, and you’ll find a range of other different options too, such as side lift ottoman beds that are perfect for small bedrooms as you can put them up against a wall and still maintain good access. Whatever look you're after, we have you covered with our top picks of the best ottoman beds out there.

Which are the best ottoman beds?
In a nice aesthetic pink, Dusk's Oslo is one of our favourite ottoman beds for bringing a bit of style into the bedroom, while also having plenty of storage space.
With its arresting contrast of natural wood and plush velvet, and its generous storage capacity, this statement bed frame really stands out. Its pale ash body brings a slice of Scandinavian calm to the bedroom while the velvet headboard, in whichever colour you choose, adds a touch of glamour.
This minimalist contemporary ottoman bed comes in a neutral grey fabric finish with a hand-upholstered headboard offering a soft curve. Best though, is its trick-of-the-eye design: elevated with chic wooden feet, you wouldn’t believe it’s an ottoman-style storage bed at all.

Why should you buy an ottoman-style bed?
An ottoman bed gives you tonnes of extra storage without taking up any extra floor space in the bedroom, making them a huge draw for those of us drowning in clutter but without the room for additional furniture pieces like wardrobes or chests of drawers.
Unlike some storage beds, an ottoman design gives you easy access to your things thanks to their lift mechanisms, without having to fumble about at the back of a drawer or in the dark corners of a divan base. High-quality ottoman beds from reputable furniture stores will stand the test of time too, offering hidden storage for years to come.
Are ottoman beds heavy to lift up?
A well-designed ottoman bed can be surprisingly easy to manoeuvre, thanks to its gas-sprung hydraulics system, or pistons, which will take the weight of a duvet, mattress – whether memory foam, hybrid or a pocket spring option – and the slatted base of the bed, so that you don’t have to.
With a little tug at either the foot end or the side of the bed, this section gently glides up, and back down again, where the weight of the mattress will hold the mechanism in place. This smooth action is particularly impressive with a super king or an emperor-size bed – you’ll feel like The Hulk.
Should I choose an end-opening or side-opening ottoman bed?
Most ottoman-style beds feature an end, or foot, opening mechanism. This allows easy access to all three sides of the bed if yours is positioned in the centre of the room. Of course, this works just as well if your bed is flanked next to a wall and it gives you the flexibility of moving your furniture around without having to worry about changing your ottoman’s opening side. That said, side-opening ottoman beds can be particularly useful in smaller spaces, and in loft conversions with a slanted ceiling, they are, of course, a no-brainer.
How does GQ choose the best ottoman beds?
All of GQ’s interiors guides are written by our in-house team of contributing testers and experts, and are edited by Daphne Bugler, British GQ’s Senior Commerce Writer, who has been working at GQ for the past four years, and has written extensively about interiors since 2020. The team regularly talks to experts in a variety of interiors categories to better understand the products we write about and what we should be looking for.
When choosing the best ottoman beds, we consider a range of criteria including looks, price, functionality and storage space, as well as picking products from brands we know and trust, and ultimately featuring the things we wished we owned ourselves. We measure storage space and the bed sizes on offer, as well as looking at the various manufacturers’ guarantees and the expected delivery times for the beds.
