Startup sold to IBM for Rs 37,000 Cr

Indian-origin entrepreneur Sunny Gupta recently sold one of his startups, Apptio — a SaaS (software as a service) company, to IBM

The 53-year-old was born in Chandigarh. His father was an IAS officer while his mother's side of the family had entrepreneurs

In 1989, Sunny Gupta moved to the US to study at the University of South Carolina, where he was given a partial scholarship

As he told NYT, “I started working odd jobs to support myself. I cleaned dishes. I worked as a mover. I studied like crazy and got a full scholarship”

Sunny Gupta's first job was as a software developer, but the pace at which his career was growing wasn't enough to satisfy him

He told NYT, “My first job was as a software developer, and then I did some consulting. But I said to myself, “This is going too slow”

In 1996, at the age of 26, he founded his first venture, which was an enterprise application software company. For the first 6-9 months, Gupta didn't draw any salary

His second venture called Performant, a software firm. His third venture, which was centered around data center automation, was sold for $70 million, in 2007

Gupta is passionate about solving the customers’s problems through software and believes that money shouldn’t be the main motivation behind starting a business
