In business from 1834-1907, prints and lithographs

In business from 1834-1907, prints and lithographs by Currier & Ives hung in more American homes than any other art, and their aesthetic was so important to the image of nineteenth-century America that it’s often used as a shorthand to describe the era. The firm principals’ names you know, but do you know Frances Flora Bond Palmer, an illustrator in the firm’s employ? She was distinguished as the only woman artist to work for the firm, and her images were used for calendars, greeting cards, and advertisements. Despite the widespread popularity of her work, Palmer died in obscurity, #OnThisDay in 1876. She was interred at Green-Wood and her grave remained unmarked for over a century. Fortunately, a monument was placed in her honor in 2017 as part of Green-Wood’s Unmarked Graves Project. Spearheaded by historian Jeff Richman, the project seeks to memorialize the graves of notable Green-Wood residents for whom a monument was never installed. What emerges is a journey through time that is simultaneously whimsical, fantastical, playful and profound, offering a poignant reminder of what it means to be human – despite taking place entirely after our species has vanished from the planet.
