The exterior of this ranch house in Los Angeles' Santa Monica neighborhood borrows from classic farmhouse precedents, with lap siding and a standing-seam metal roof giving it a more rural feel.

In this foyer, white oak wall and ceiling panels pay homage to old barn interiors. To connect the house with its coastal California location, designers used a blue color palette throughout the rooms. Here, the foyer gets a gray-blue hardwood floor and a blue mirror.

Architects elevated the low profile of this ranch home with high, vaulted ceilings and lots of natural light coming in through skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows. In the dining room, the design influence was the nearby Pacific Ocean with blue-green watercolor wallpaper and a sea glass-inspired chandelier.

This living room wins the day when it comes to cozy with its expansive, built-in bookshelves, fireplace and unique doorway. For the doorway, designers created a paneled white oak vestibule in a classic barn shape to transition from the dining room into the living room. So many skylights open the space to the outdoors.
