The Vampire Chronicles Anne Rice - P 2014
Ballantine BooksAnne Rice is planning to bring her Vampire Chronicles book series to the small screen.
“The theatrical rights to the Vampire Chronicles are once again in my hands, free and clear!,” the author announced Saturday in a lengthy post to her Facebook page. “A television series of the highest quality is now my dream for Lestat, Louis, Armand, Marius and the entire tribe.”
Universal and Imagine Entertainment had acquired the film rights to the book series, which centers on a 18th century French nobleman-turned-vampire, in 2014. But Rice says she realized that her stories are better suited for TV.
“Though we had the pleasure of working with many fine people in connection with this plan, it did not work out,” she wrote of Universal and Imagine’s plans to option the series into several movies. “It is, more than ever, abundantly clear that television is where the vampires belong.”

She and son Christopher Rice, who will serve as executive producer of the planned series, will be developing a pilot script and detailed outline for an open-ended project “faithfully presenting Lestat’s story as it is told in the books.” She said they will likely begin with The Vampire Lestat, the second book of the series.
The author continued to the fans: “Over the years you all have told me how much you want to see a Game of Thrones style faithful rendering of this material, and how much you want for the series to remain in my control. Well, I have heard you. I have always heard you. What you want is what I want.”
Rice ended the message by saying she was filled with optimism about the future for “my beloved Brat Prince. What better way to start a tour for the new book!”
Some of Rice’s novels from the vampire series have seen their way to the big screen in the past. Warner Bros. made Interview With the Vampire (based on the first book in the series) into a 1994 film starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. The 2002 film Queen of the Damned also took inspiration from Rice’s series.
