During the Emmys’ star-studded opening number — featuring Kate McKinnon, Kenan Thompson, Kristen Bell, Tituss Burgess and more stars — Roseanne Barr became the butt of one of many jokes made about the divisive climate in Hollywood. In a song that mocked Harvey Weinstein and the industry’s lack of diversity, among other sensitive topics, Trump enthusiast Barr came up courtesy of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star Burgess.
“And when it comes to politics, we know exactly where we stand,” the group sang in unison, to which Burgess responded: “Roseanne!” Bell quickly turned to him, waved her finger and said, “No!”
The premiere of the Roseanne revival drew huge ratings for ABC, with more than 27 million people watching the debut and a massive 8.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic (including a week of delayed viewing). Though its audience tailed off some after that, it still ended the season as the No. 1 non-sports show on network TV.
Then it came crashing down. On May 29, ABC canceled the show after its namesake star and executive producer, posted a racist tweet about former White House adviser Valerie Jarrett.
Emmy voters gave the show two nominations, for supporting actress Laurie Metcalf and for multicamera picture editing for a comedy series (Will & Grace won the latter award at the Creative Arts Emmys).
ABC subsequently ordered a spinoff of Roseanne titled The Conners that will feature the show’s Conner family moving on without Roseanne. Barr and producer Werner Entertainment struck a deal that severed Barr’s creative and financial involvement in the spinoff.
The series premieres Oct. 16.
