Any true discussion about this history of women filmmakers has to begin with Alice Guy-Blaché. The first female director started off as a secretary for a photography and camera manufacturing company before filming her debut short clip “La Fée aux Choux” in 1896. Guy-Blaché is credited as the first female director (and the only one from 1896 – 1906) and is also acknowledged as the first director to film a narrative story. She directed her last film, ”Tarnished Reputations,” in 1920.
