Concerned residents were lining up Wednesday to donate blood for best-selling horror writer Stephen King, who was having a third lengthy operation after being knocked down by a van, hospital officials said.

“His blood needs are actually taken care of here, but it’s always a good idea to give blood, so I think those gestures are greatly appreciated,” Central Maine Medical Center spokesman Randall Dustin said.

King was taken to the medical center after a van hit him while he was walking along a highway Saturday. He was in serious but stable condition in an intensive care unit before Wednesday’s surgery to repair his shattered hip.

The operation was expected to take 11 hours.
