Singer Chris Brown was released from jail early Monday morning, several months before completing his one-year sentence, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials confirmed.

In early May, Brown, 25, was sentenced to a year in jail by a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge for violating his probation in connection with a 2009 attack on his then-girlfriend, pop star Rihanna.

Brown admitted in court to his arrest last October. He was charged with assault in an incident outside of a Washington hotel.

The R&B singer was released just after midnight on Monday from the county’s Inmate Reception Center, L.A. County sheriff’s Deputy Don Walker said.

Brown had served several months in jail and more than three months in a rehab program prior to his sentencing and had been expected to be released early due to overcrowding in Los Angeles County jails.

During Brown’s May 9 sentencing, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge James Brandlin extended the entertainer’s probation upon his release from jail to Jan. 23, 2015. Brown also will be required to see a Pasadena psychiatrist twice a week as well as a therapist, complete his outstanding community service, take appropriate medication and not use medical marijuana.

Brown still faces a misdemeanor assault trial in the nation’s capital.
