Here's how you can broaden access to care using telemedicine and remote monitoring technologies.

Virtual appointments, or telemedicine appointments can be brilliant for people with busy jobs, or those who work away from home. The challenge around booking and attending video appointments is that most systems are tricky to log into, join on-time, even when doctors are running behind, and challenging to connect the camera and sound on the device. We have to reduce the friction in patients using these tools and enable self-booking of a single appointment per patient, calendar reminders and ease of use during appointments. Some hospitals have used Bookings on Teams to great effect for this now you don't need an account to join. Many people have work or school accounts so patients and doctors often already know how to navigate in Teams.

Telemedicine is another way of meeting the patient's needs without seeing them in person. Technology has allowed us to connect easily and virtually. Though it cannot 100% replace a face to face interaction but there are so many scenarios where more patients can be served by meeting with them virtually, especially where it is geographically prohibitive. I see many of my clients and patients online.

While in the West, Telemedicine is a "convenient" way to deliver care, in countries like India where 70% of the population lives in rural areas, while 70% of the Doctors live in cities, Telemedicine is quite literally the only way to deliver access to hospital-grade care for people in those regions. In India, we set up eClinics in our villages with affordable but advanced and easy-to-use medical devices that can measure 60+ vitals in the clinic or the patient's home. The vitals are transmitted along with symptoms and other relevant patient medical data to teams of Doctors in urban areas who provide the necessary treatment & medication. The same applies to remote locations in Africa and across the world.

As a healthcare chaplain, I've seen the profound impact of Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) on patient care. I recall an elderly woman with a chronic heart condition whose health data was monitored in real-time and transmitted to her healthcare provider. One afternoon, her readings indicated a potential issue. The timely alert allowed her doctor to intervene quickly, preventing a serious complication. Today, we deliver the next generation of home care, elder care, and rural care only by leveraging these technologies. While most of the remote health monitoring done currently is discrete vitals monitoring, the new wearable devices that we are launching will also enable continuous monitoring of multiple critical vitals, which will be crucial for enabling the highest level of chronic care, preventive care & wellness for anybody, anytime, anywhere! This capability integrated with an AI engine will also enable providing preemptive alerts for adverse events.

In India, a lot of the laws related to Telemedicine, RPM etc. are being framed while the technologies are being developed and pilots are being implemented. We also enable easy amalgamation and assimilation with other technologies being used to ensure quick implementations.

Easy and wide adoption of Telemedicine & Remote Health Monitoring depends primarily on its ease-of-use. We debuted RHEMOS as a seamlessly integrated TeleHealth Ecosystem that enabled comprehensive Telemedicine through Remote Health Monitoring. While all issues related to data privacy, data security, adhering to regulatory issues etc. were baked in to the design, our most important feature was that our solution could be used by patients themselves, by their families & caregivers or even by basic paramedics - all with a little bit of training. It can make us remotely monitor their functions and make adjustments accordingly. 2. Telemedicine has been used to establish stroke programs which allows doctors to evaluate and treat stroke patients in time. 3. Telemedicine also facilitates clinical reasearch. This improves the accuracy and efficiency as well as increase patient participation.
