Try to stay a step ahead. Learn how the industry is changing and get informed. If your company relies on excel, learn R. If you think AI will play a role someday but you are in a large company, slow to change; learn the different implementations on your own and test at home. Keeping abreast and ahead of the curve will make your life easier, improve your "street cred", and maybe get your boss to rain some more $$$ on your paycheck! I'm retired, I used those methods, and I made it rain more than once.

1.) I consider situational awareness to be crucial in dealing with all aspects of IT system administration. Know what you are doing, why you are doing it, who is affected, and how you will tell them. 2.) Keep the business priorities in mind when triaging a crisis event, planning changes or carrying out routine tasks. "Aligning your compass" will help keep you low impact when performing planned changes and highly effective when mitigating the small or severe disasters that come with the IT territory. 3.) Tailor communication to the stakeholder audience. Inform as much as is necessary yet as simply as possible. Documentation and team communication should be thorough and detailed. End user infos should be quickly and easily understood.

Situational awareness is key! Consider the result of your automation or scripting to tailor it to the expected or desired result. I programmed a complete data storage system when it meant large amounts of non-volatile information should be readily available on 500 end user machines, rather than constantly eating bandwidth. This effort was worth the time involved in programming and testing the solution. However, when doing one off scripting for data transfers during a merger for instance; a simple list of static commands was easier to program, debug, and implement rather than adding in loops and variables that required more testing and possibly introduce errors.
