How can you build a network when new to Private Equity?

Building a network takes time and persistence. Be genuine in your interactions, offer value to your connections, and maintain those relationships over time. Networking is not just about what you can gain, but also about what you can contribute to others in your network. My two favorites, amongst other strategies, include: 1. Develop a Niche Expertise: Cultivate expertise in a specific area of PE that interests you, for example in healthcare or technology. Being knowledgeable in a niche area can make you a valuable connection for others in that sphere. 2. Mentorship: Seek a mentor within the PE industry. A mentor can provide guidance, introduce you to their network, and help you navigate the complexities of the field.

It's not just about who you know, but understanding the 'why' behind your connections. Setting clear goals is key, but equally important is staying adaptable and open to learning. Networking in PE is dynamic; it's about finding synergies and aligning with those who not only advance your current objectives but also challenge and expand your perspective. Always be ready to pivot and embrace new opportunities that your network might reveal.

You need to have a strategy. Perhaps target a particular sector or type of introducer type. You can’t cover the whole market across multiple sectors or you’ll spread yourself thinly. Keep interactions periodic - meeting someone once is likely to payback in a meaningful way.

there are a couple of different mechanisms of building networks tat the authors and contributors have spoken to that involve the targeted and sector targeting. I agree that these are important - One of the valuable components of diversity in our networks is the asymmetric or orthogonal layer tat we often miss because we are so sector and task focused. sometimes a suggestion from learnings of a orgthogonal experience can be just as valuable as a directed one. - thoughts? we can always refine networks, casting a broad net and refining can help us optimize our Q&A

When reaching out to potential connections, always think about how you can offer value to them. Share relevant insights or resources that align with their interests. I once shared a research paper with a contact, which led to a fruitful discussion and a lasting connection. Leverage your educational or professional alumni networks. Alumni often have a strong bond and are willing to support each other's career journeys. I connected with alumni from my business school who were in Private Equity, which opened doors to valuable introductions. Implement a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system to track and manage your contacts. This helps you stay organized and follow up effectively.

Research, research, research is a key to this. The more we learn in our work, the more we can refine or de-link our efforts to achieve. Of course there is the "rabbit-hole" phenomenon we all seem to encounter with the aspect of what is relevant to our initial hypothesis and what is now becoming a distraction? Being able to focus on this internally as well as looking objectively with teammates to refine and limit scope is helpful in accelerating productivity.

Linkedin has provided a fantastic platform for creating and suggesting additional connections to expand networks for the asymmetric and orthogonal network - and NO I don't work for LinkedIn.... ;). I get suggestions every day, some of whom are helpful and others I have wondered how the algorithm arrives at this - its an interesting thought exercise. As with all things, we can selectively add or remove at or discretion from the broad swath we are presented with - Judicious selection is always up the final operator.

Ensure you have your elevator pitch honed. The more simple and clear you are about what you’re doing and looking for the more likely they are to remember you.

Being proactive and persistent in networking is crucial. This involves leveraging online platforms, developing a personal brand, continuously learning about industry trends, focusing on mutual benefits, and being patient. It’s about building long-term, mutually beneficial relationships, not just making contacts. Despite the time it takes, persistent efforts in networking will yield long-term benefits.

I've encouraged teams to run their pitches backwards and forward. Give the pitch to someone not in your field - do they get it - this assures that you're not simply targeting one or two people in a group. Multidisciplinary teams are often the norm in any VC or investor pitch. Convergent thinkers: refine from the mileu Start with your full non-con deck and create a 5 slide problem and solutions deck, refine this into a one slide elevator pitch. Divergent thinkers: create a mileu from a singleton. Start with your elevator pitch issue, expand it into a manageable 5 deck ad then proceed to your Non-con deck. although simplified and simplistic- I have found this to be helpful with a broader swath of teams I have worked with in messaging.

Networking is not about sales, it is about building a relationship. It is important to realise that we are human being who want connection so see the comfort and develop your relationships. It is not about quantity but quality. With 20yrs of experience, I can tell you that my 'network' includes under 10 people who I can call when I want to get something done and vise versa.

Networking is a lifelong journey for us all. Along the way we will experience our transactional meetings , our impactful meetings, and the best of all - those interactions that develop into real relationships that define the phrase "I've got your Six" they are rarer than we think and have to be careful to identify the transactional that appears to be more from the real that IS more. Practice and time in the filed will help us all to identify authentic from simply transactional.

Networking involves creating meaningful connections. Be authentic, prepare a pitch, do research, and communicate clearly. Take the initiative to connect; it often unfolds naturally. Stay curious, show genuine interest, and prioritize listening in your interactions.

My tips for anyone new to the industry would be: - Don’t let people tell you it’s only a “senior” priority - building your network is critical and valuable for all - Connect, don’t expect: focus on building relationships rather than connecting to ask for something specific - Make it a calendar block: if you treat building your network with the same focus as the rest of your career the value will compound over time - The sooner you start the more valuable your network will be over time - Offer value to your network - share articles with individuals, ideas or leads, without expecting anything back

A diverse network can provide fresh perspectives and opportunities (b) After initial meetings or interactions, follow up with your contacts. Maintain regular communication to nurture relationships over time. Show genuine interest in their success (c) Continuously seek feedback on your networking efforts. Learn from your experiences and adjust your approach as needed to enhance your networking skills (d) Collaborate with colleagues and contacts on investment opportunities. Joint ventures and co-investments are excellent ways to strengthen relationships and share risks.

Attend events and meet people in person. Nothing beats real life interactions. Keep in touch with people you’ve completed transactions with. Invest in relationships at your level as they will grow with you through your career and have a longer payback period.
