As per the Agile manifesto, Documentation is not preferred over a working software but is still important & still very important.working with XP doesnt mean documentation must be ignored infact there should be better ways to find how to document on the go while doing the actual work. Documenting must never be considered as an additional work or an overhead. The documentation is felt challenging only when its not considered as a part of the XP. minimal documentation must be normalized / made mandatory irrespective of which frameworks are being used.

Documentations that describe how an applications is built (architecture, design and code) and documentations that describe how an application is used. This will provide a big picture of the application building blocks and how they interact. As for codes, there is no better documentation than unit tests, code format and good naming. For the 2nd categories, having a well organized set of functional test plans can be a great source of truth. Something to consider is behavior driven development.
