But before the pandemia, we all saw people that were constantly having coffee, smoking, checking restaurants or fashion shops on their mobiles. Or simply taking the longest approach to complete a particular task. So working from the office guarantees physical presence in the office, but not productivity. They are there, yes, but are they being effective? Besides, I have always had teams spread all over the world. So I have never felt the need to have them near me in order to trust them! So being able to measure productivity and results have always been fundamental, especially in jobs that require creativity, can be done in infinite ways, and are difficult to assess.

Our team always strives to be on the edge of technology, using the latest standards and ensuring a great result for our clients. Based on this we do spend a great amount of time training our team members. This happens in multiple ways. Most importantly each team member have their own training path depending on their specialty and they do training online for that. In addition we organise internal training sessions where a team member will train the other team members on a specific technology or new standard to be used so that the know-how in the team is expanded, which also ensures continuity on the projects and the knowledge of the team.

Tive como experiência em nosso ambiente de trabalho propor uma sala virtual onde todos ficam logados facilitando a comunicação entre eles. Por se tratar de um squad heterogêneo e multiskill, outra dinâmica proposta foi que cada um apresentasse o seu dia-a-dia, demonstrando como suas tarefas são realizadas. Um último ponto é que em toda reunião 1:1 trimestral faço o desafio de que cada um me apresente um curso ( que pode ser realizado em qualquer formato ou lugar) voltado para a área de TI e outro voltado para seu crescimento pessoal.

I created a meeting invite for remote and/or on-site staff for well-being/keep-in-touch ‘coffee and catch-up’ for which the purpose was to just ‘shoot the breeze’ for 20 mins; no set agenda other than ‘how are you?’ We rarely, if ever, strayed into work issues but where we did I made a note and we had seperate catch up outside of that meeting. And when the time comes, once there are face to face meetings it is easier to continue working as if everyone was always working at the same site.

Depending on the situation and the task at hand, I would suggest that having two remote teams meet once face to face and getting to know each other, seeing the work environment of the other team can really speed things up as the band between the team members will be much stronger. Of course this requires an investment of time and money but in my personal experience, because people really know each other this will be paid back fully in throughput time and job satisfaction.
