How can you lead remote teams in Financial Technology?

In my experience with remote teams in fintech is to lead communication with expectations and teamwork to stay connected. It’s similar to the use case of the clients so makes fintech staff more relatable when leveraging the right tech tools to be part of a successful team. A few key examples I leverage in the leadership role within Fintech are 1) never stop learning and researching solutions 2) share share share with teammates! Tech changes so fast and it builds rapport in a team when open knowledge sharing occurs 3) leverage team teach back sessions. This gives the presenter practice and the “audience” a learning opportunity.

Leading remote teams in fintech means shifting from control to trust. Reject micromanagement; focus on supporting and unblocking your team. Encourage open communication and balance virtual chats with real-life interactions. In our team, we've created a virtual reality for daily banter, aligning remote and in-person members. Remember, inspire, don't micromanage. Hire smart, trust their expertise, and let them flourish.

Since the firm is seeking to promote offering service in the comfort of one’s homes and offices, it shouldn’t be hard for the a team in a tech firm. The set realistic goals and measurable expectations should be pegged with deadlines, deliverables, track and regular evaluation. This create a sense of direction, accountability, and feedback for the remote team.

Security is the most important parameter for any finance based organisation. In terms of remote development assigning Task to the developers should be well defined and developers should deliver the task by checking the security parameters. In remote job setup everyone belongs to their own C-level position on their work statuon. So when a remote developer work on his own should understand his/her responsibility first. Otherwise productivity might suffer and you do not want to search for your spec in an odd chat😉 So having clearly understood and followed standards is very important, so is diligence in following them. It can save you lots of time and money later.

For fifteen years, I have led a remote workforce. Regular team meetings and one on ones plus small (or large) gifts 🎁 sent to team members, lots of fun meetings (birthdays are great!) remind people they might be solo but not alone!!

Scheduled team meetings with time to visit as a group and one on one meetings with individuals help to foster trust, consistency, and support. As a leader, it is important to be humble and share areas of success, but also to be vulnerable and share experiences that didn't go as planned. This opens the door for others to speak up and feel comfortable. Encouraging brainstorming (without judgement) and asking for the team's input on items also provides opportunities for growth and rapport. I am a big believer in servant leadership. Helping your team grow fosters a positive culture and can lead to great things.

For me it is very much also about leaving room for jokes, small spontaneous celebrations and humor that finds it's way into the chatrooms:-)

"Trust but verify". When you make your team feel trusted, they are bound to complete their tasks without needing micromanagement. However, random checks by way of a phone call and discussing things that they are onto. Gives the sense of being important to the members. This also helps you verify what your team is doing. This loop needs to continue to foster a sense of trust between the leader and the team. Also constant scheduled calls should always be short and the agenda should be available to the team prior. The urge to reprimand on this call should be avoided at all costs. At the same time praising where its due helps keep the morale of the team high.

In my previous organizations, where I had to build teams ground up, I always gave opportunities to people who were desperate for an opportunity. These, when given the opportunity, bring a lot to the table for the team to learn and move forward together. Their hunger, when channeled correctly, catches on to the team and the team as a whole comes up quickly. Mixing people from diverse backgrounds also helps the team learn new things.

DEI is an issue for fintech regardless how you are organized and work, something every leader should tackle from day 1 as once your team has reached a certain size, it will be super hard to change! Invest in diversity, the innovation and creativity it brings is in my view priceless.

Failure of the team and its leader to continuously adapt to changing technologies and the manner it shapes the world of work could create a disharmonious work environment. A leader in financial technologies would be able to drive remote teams anywhere across the world if they are lifelong learners and innovative in their approach to work. I expect that such leaders subscribe to top podcasts and newsletters in order to stay ahead with updates to work tools leveraging on technology for the sector they operate in AI, blockchain, Machine Learning, etc which they can then cascade down and across their teams. The leader must stay agile and disseminate an agile learning culture.

We have completely flexible working hrs as a team and are results and achievements led. And in my experience this has been good for some, and less helfpul for others of our team members. Rather than strict control, what helps is regular communication and exchange. In addition you need rules to allow for off-times, as once a culture of "have to answer now" at any given time of day and week creeps in, it is very stressful and hard to get rid of and might lead to exhaustion of the team.

There is alot of data out there that suggests a hybrid model for work is best. In my personal experience, remote working is great if you want to concentrate and focus on something. It's not as great with team building and fostering creative engagements. You miss out on body language, tone and the general energy of people. Who is allowed to do remote work is also a factor. Some people work well and are focused at home (self-driven). Others need the buzz of an office and to seperate work from home - similar to those who prefer to workout at a gym. I think a binary, one-size-fits-all approach can be very destructive in this space.

Na fase mais desafiadora da minha gestão remota eu li sem querer o Livro Hábitos Atômicos de James Clear e ele fez toda a diferença. A partir do conceito de 1% de melhora diária, decidi focar na simplicidade de planilhas de RACI com entregas semanais além de cerimônias de Scrum no início do dia para todos nos "vermos". A cada dia que passa, o time fica mais maduro e a disciplina se solidifica a ponto de estarem preparados para mais complexidade sem que percebam.

Collaboration is key to having successful teams. This can be a challenge with remote and geographically dispersed teams. For me, the key is having strong communication within the team, not just daily updates but ensuring the team members are communicating with each other throughout the day. A group of six people working independently will never accomplish as much as six people working together. They can share ideas, check each others' work, help solve problems, and keep people from getting stuck. Overall, this leads to faster progress towards goals.

Please do not forget about proper access to security onboarding and best practices. Remote is great, when it is safe and secure. Make sure people know to use their devices, how to choose the safe internet connection, be able to cut their access quickly whenever you will there is a problem.

When you lead remote teams, it's about getting the perspective right as a leader. Not all markets behave the same. One should be able to understand this and manage the expectations of delivery from the team accordingly.

The same with other tech industry remote teams is not really a challenge for fintech. However what needs to be able to deliver clearly for the remote team is to ensure the team all despite of they might be not local team but they have understanding of local context, laws, usage and demographics of the competitor Fintech is very complex and personal. It is also hard to just rely on transferable knowledge, but being on the ground and talking to those who have been there, done there will help.
