How can you use active listening to stay up-to-date on industry trends?

Active listening is so important in both business and personal life. As a business development consultant, I am always listening to "I need, I want, do you know anybody" to get business leads for my clients. In addition, attentively listening to podcasts, webinars, industry conferences, and discussions, one can gain a deeper understanding of emerging concepts, challenges, and innovations to stay up-to-date with the latest trends in your field. Listening to clients and making sure, we provide excellent customer services to meet their needs is key.

When I deliver my sales training, I always say we have 2 ears and one mouth for a reason, we should be listening twice as much as we speak. In sales or any relationship building activity, active listening is important to making sure that we listen to understand and respond appropriately.

Be aware of the conversation and people your involved with to develop consciousness of what they really are about, what they want need and if they are worth getting involved with.

One of the best clues to being a good listener is to ask effective follow up questions. Why, how come, how much, oh tell me more. Sometimes people tell you a little to see if you are interested or can be helpful and the follow ups get you a pass when they will tell you why they are telling you something. That is where the potential follow up can come from.

The foundation of a successful relationship or partnership is communication and understanding. Active listening allows you to get a deeper understanding by asking another layer of questions. Being aware of how someone answers a question or makes a statement can lead to clarifying follow-up questions. It also brings a higher level of understanding between both parties as the listener can confirm their the details while the speaker is assured they were heard and understood. Both will leave the interaction with confidence in how to proceed.

Personally, I’ve found that at networking events, focusing on the person I’m talking to, rather than getting overwhelmed by the crowd, helps me actively listen. Creating a genuine connection becomes easier when I ask questions that show curiosity and really delve into their experiences. Making eye contact and using verbal cues lets them know I’m fully engaged in our conversation. Taking a moment to summarize what they’ve shared not only confirms my understanding but also adds a personal touch to the interaction. Be curious of the other person, and be kind, always!

End the small talk! Every interaction is an opportunity to ask meaningful questions about someone’s business, interests and work. Go network with someone new and set the intention you want to learn from them. You want to have an convo that digs into your curiosity and their expertise. Folks love to share their truths.

Shift your mindset from 'performing' in a networking setting to 'Curiosity and Connection.' Often, people are nervous in networking settings because they feel the spotlight is on them or they need to 'pitch.' Change the focus to the person next to you - be curious about them as a person, not just as a potential means to your ends. Once they are talking, connect. Ask natural follow-up probing questions to uncover their interests, goals, fears, desires, and objectives. Listen for ways you can be helpful - whether it's introductions to others, information, or resources - even if it is restaurant recommendations or a podcast. Seeking to be authentically connected and helpful puts the emphasis on active listening and away from 'performing'.

HAy una actitud que es vital para que todo lo que tenga que ver en los negocios (y en la vida) salga bien. Ser curioso/a. Tener una actitud de búsqueda de oportunidades, centrarse en ello y no en los pensamientos negativos, que hacen que la mirada sea interna y dejemos pasar oportunidades que pasan delante de nuestros ojos.

Based on my experience, active listening requires effort and intentionality, but the benefits of improved understanding and stronger relationships make it well worth the investment. Active listening in diverse networks is crucial to enhancing communication and collaboration among individuals from different backgrounds and perspectives. By practicing empathy, staying open-minded, and asking clarifying questions, we can create a more inclusive and respectful environment for all voices to be heard. To improve one's active listening skills, one should commit to being present and open-minded. PS. I recommend asking clarifying questions since it's very helpful, especially in the beginning.

This is an interesting one especially if your in networks that you're not very knowledgeable about. Don't be scared about asking questions about things people are discussing that you don't know much about. People are happy to help amd educate you. Be honest that you don't know as much as you should as use the knowledgeable people there to help you. Swallow your pride, don't pretend you know more than you do, and ask.

Active listening involves - using all your faculties like, ears, mind and heart when attending such networking platforms/ events - looking for non-verbal clues, body language, facial expressions and hand and arms gestures - Empathy and Mindfulness - acknowledgement and appreciation - asking questions and engaging with the speakers/ audience All these will help get the best results from these networking events/ platforms

Es importante practicar la escucha activa en las sesiones de retroalimentación porque facilita la comprensión de los puntos de vista del otro, promueve el crecimiento personal y profesional, y fortalece las relaciones laborales. To listen actively during feedback sessions, it's important to prepare yourself mentally and emotionally. Remind yourself that feedback is not a personal attack, but a tool for improvement. When listening to the feedback, focus on the facts, examples, and suggestions provided. Don't interrupt or become defensive, but instead ask for clarification or examples if needed. Acknowledge and appreciate the feedback by thanking the feedback giver for their time and effort. If you disagree with the feedback, express your understanding or disagreement respectfully. Ask for action steps or follow-up if needed. Remember, the goal of feedback sessions is not to place blame, but to identify areas for improvement and growth.

If you would like to improve your active listening skills, start with the simple practice: Resist the urge to interrupt. Allow the speaker to express their thoughts thoroughly before responding. In this case, they will share way more! Additionally, interruptions can disrupt the flow of communication and hinder a complete understanding. Here is my "what else" rule, as I like to call it: if I feel there is more to the story or they perhaps did not share everything I wanted to know, simply asking 'what else' will open another chapter!

Allocate dedicated time in your schedule to systematically update your knowledge base. Actively seek out industry reports, research papers, and reputable publications that provide comprehensive insights into the latest trends. Set up subscriptions or notifications for newsletters and publications relevant to your field to receive timely updates.

Let me introduce you to the 3 levels of listening: 1) Your main focus is on yourself - leading to “selective listening” meaning that you are not fully hearing the other person. 2) Your attention is solely on this person you are having a conversation with ("attentive listening”). 3) Your whole sensorium is highly alert. Tone of voice, body language, pauses, fidgeting, clearing of the throat,… you “hear” it all & you use your intuition to sense which meaning it might have. & the importance? A “Domino effect”, i.e. level 3 listening fosters understanding & empathy - building trust - which is essential for a positive & productive work environment - leading to effective communication, i.e. reducing misunderstandings or misinterpretations.

A personal experience emphasizes the importance of active listening. I am convinced that it is also essential in the big picture of a company to actively live and promote this culture in order to experience appreciation in the workforce and only through this to allow entrepreneurial added value in the form of ideas, changes, adaptations and praise.
