Don’t forget the value of work experience when gaining your qualifications. Nothing beats face to face time, hands on experience & opportunities to get to understand people struggling with addiction. If you don’t have first hand knowledge of the recovery process think about volunteering in your community.

Absolutely agree with finding your own niche & working with what resonates most with you. People respond better with authentic people & recovering addicts can be hyper aware of their surroundings and very quick to pick up if someone’s not appropriately engaged. Most importantly remember you cannot be an expert in all things, know your niche & “if in doubt refer out”!

This is an area of coaching that shouldn't be taken likely. Recovery is complex, and even after completing more than 75% of a Master's level counseling program I wouldn't feel comfortable offering addiction and recovery coaching.

Recovery is rarely linear. Expect your clients to experience set backs & be clear about what is expected. Most people who become addicted to drugs, sex, gambling, alcohol etc did so to avoid dealing with underlying issues, trauma, abuse, mental health struggles, grief or feeling unable to cope with various challenges, difficulties or intense situations. It’s a fine line between helping & hindering the process so know your own professional & personal limitations. It can be difficult seeing a client slip but keep the faith & practice self care. Everyone is whole. You are only responsible for yourself. Practice what you preach!
