Industrial IoT network is quite different from the consumer IoT network, where the penetration of wireless or even the TCP/Ethernet is quite scarce. There are lot of different protocols such as CAN, IO-Link, ASCI etc. which operate on limited data bandwidth network. At the same times a lot of new IoT sensors have Ethernet connectivity on long range such as NBIoT, LoRAWAN plays a different role to the traditional methods. Then there is the field bus protocol such as Ethernet IP, Profinet etc. hence designing IoT industrial network need to factors a lot of different combinations.

In industrial OT setup, the PLCs are connected to the managed switch or I/O modules with device level redundancy (DLR) which are connected to the OT LAN. The DLR can be connected to the WAN for the gateway connection through another managed switch. For the security aspects consider network segmentation or dividing the OT network into separate zones based on functionality, area or sensitivity of data exchange. In addition, data encryption for the communication between the I/O devices and the plant gateway should be considered using Transport Socket Layer (TLS) or network-level security. Also access control of tags should be ensured to avoid unnecessary read or write of data into them.

I like to think about optimization and efficiency for industrial automation based on the concept of digitalization. There is no doubt that IOT is one of the main pillars for connecting the entire production line with the cloud or a database, but just the available database does not translate into efficiency. An industrial digitalization strategy is needed that understands why, where and how each device is used to its best performance.

Whithin the industrial automation scenario, we can consider IoT networks composed of two main areas: sensor network (data acquisition) and platform network (data ingestion) network. Sensor networks are tipically OT networks that transmit industrial protocol datagrams (i.e. Profinet). In my humble experience, the main criticality come from firewalls that often block industrial protocols datagram (not really firewall friendly) or congestions (i.e. caused from a faulty PLC or misconfigurations). The second area of IoT network is more similar on a standard IT network where network admins feels more confortables. Point of attention: IoT edge component collect data from the sensor network (OT) and convert it into MQTT or similar IT protcols.

Continuously optimize the IoT network to improve performance, efficiency, and scalability. Conduct periodic assessments to identify bottlenecks, optimize resource allocation, and fine-tune network configurations. Implement quality of service (QoS) policies to prioritize critical traffic and ensure consistent performance for industrial automation applications.
