When I worked as a job coach with teenagers with disabilities, my job was to observe and record their work without judgement, e.g. noting how many times someone completed a task versus reporting that they were unmotivated because they worked slowly. That approach is helpful in identifying common ground in a conflict. Start from what is objectively true. Often there are conflicting expectations or miscommunication. When I volunteered with kids in a homeless shelter, another volunteer got angry with me for working with the preschoolers more often than with the older kids. I had no idea that she wanted more time with the little ones and actually had no preference myself. We talked and made sure we balanced our duties.
