What are the best ways to gain experience in mechanical engineering while still in school?

Joining a team such as SAE Baja or Formula Student is really a great opportunity to perform as a mechanical engineer while in school. One can develop skills such as teamwork, communication, as well as technical skills that could be difficult or impossible to develop in a common classroom. Students who invest their time and effort participating in such kind of team will earn the fruits as professionals. As a faculty advisor of students teams for more than 25 years, I can testify how important they are.

Mechanical Engineering is all about process, my first experience at college was to write down the process of making tea. Once you understand how processes work, you must discover how things work. Get yourself an old engine/pump/clock and take it apart, see how it works.

As a Millwright both in field work and shop work. I have seen many of college kids going for this degree. They gain lots of experience working in the field and in the shop. You can learn in the classroom but you learn alot more in the real thing environment. Just my opinion. Learn from the older generation. Listen and pay attention. Food for thought.

Il faut "se mettre du cambouis sous les ongles" et sentir la matière . Démonter et remonter tout ce qui vous tombe sous la main. Retaper une vieille voiture est par exemple un excellent exercice car une automobile est un concentré de solutions mécaniques couramment utilisées. Bref ne pas croire que le génie mécanique ce n'est que des plans CAO, de la simulation, des schémas fonctionnels mais c'est un état d'esprit qui ne s'acquiert qu'à force d'expérimentation et d'essais

Je me sens tellement concerné par cette question! Ayant vécu mes études d’ingé méca, les mains et le cerveau dans la mécanique! Quelques exemples: -Regarde autour de toi, et OBSERVE combien chaque petit système qui t’entoure a été réfléchi, et demande toi POURQUOI chacun de ces choix? -Apprends la THEORIE à l’école, et cherche la PRATIQUE dans ta chambre, dans ton garage, dans une asso technique de ton école. La science s’est écrite sur la base d’EXPERIMENTATIONS. -ne te COMPARE PAS aux autres, ta CURIOSITÉ est une CHANCE, que tu es le seul à pouvoir cultiver -DEMYSTIFIE ce qui te semble une montagne, PETIT A PETIT -Quoi que te disent tes profs, reste HUMBLE devant la technique . -DIRE, ca fait RIRE, FAIRE, ca fait TAIRE! Being a mechanical engineer isn't just about applying academic knowledge, but about being able to work with and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people representing multiple disciplines. Internships and co-ops are great at exposing students to this aspect of professional life that they are unlikely to experience in school. They're also a great way for students to learn from professionals in their academic field and make connections in industry which will prove invaluable when they begin looking for full-time jobs after school.

While internships and co-ops are both great mechanisms for developing professional skills, many mechanical engineers coming out of school are missing practical hands-on experience. If the opportunity arises to work in a maintenance or mechanic focused role where the student can work hands-on with tools and get exposure to component and design failures in the real world applications, they can then take those learnings on their educational journey. The same goes for applications working in a machine shop and learning from seasoned machinists about manufacturing techniques for different features and call outs on drawings.

I think finding an internship is the most valuable thing a mechanical engineering student can do. So much of the learning comes from the work you do outside of college. The internship will give you real world experience. Other than internships, if I could do things differently, I would recommend just paying extra close attention to the mechanical design classes as well as the mechanics of materials courses. It all depends on what flavor of mechanical engineering you take on after college. Finally.... Take the FE right away!

Mechanical engineering is a practical-based course. This is the reason some institutions structure it that every mechanical engineering student engages in industrial trainings at the end of every academic session. This in a way gives the students opportunities to see and learn the practical applications of what they have learnt in school. Therefore, inorder to gain experience as a student studying mechanical engineering, it's necessary to take advantage of these periods of industrial attachments, if your institution has such provision. If not, you can request for a letter of recommendation from your institution for the training in any applicable industry.

As a budding engineer, everyone are not expected to deliver out of box solution to world. I recommend redo a project and try some improvement. Learn the mistakes and then you research and ideate for a problem. For example, creating a simple mechanism as a team and leading the team to complete it budget and time is big initial step. Learnings are more important than out of box...

The value of research really depends on what you want to do. I did research internships and there are some roles in my career that have really benefitted from it and others that it was irrelevant for. If you want to pursue a passion project, that's not quite the same thing. It's easy to push to hire a young engineer who has a website showing all the stuff they're done because they wanted to.

Undergraduate research is a great way to network with professors and decide if graduate programs are right for you. In my case, I did multiple undergraduate research projects, but found that I was not enjoying academia enough to continue with a masters degree. The projects themselves expanded my technical knowledge to fields I would not have otherwise had a chance to learn.

In the beginning of my freshman year, I undertook a research project under my assigned mentor. Immediately, I realized that I was not ready for the project, as it required more knowledge than what I was prepared for. Despite of that, I worked hard to understand and complete tasks to meet specific deadlines. Even though I have only done it for one semester and knew it wasn't for me, it helped me define what kind of engineer I wanted to be, which helped me narrow down career choices and interests down the line.

Alignment with what is important to a company just might be what makes the difference when deciding between candidates for a job. One of those characteristic pillars of what guides a company's mission statement or values is oftentimes more than just an HR mantra. Showing that you make time for volunteer work for causes that are important to you (bonus points if they relate to the company's purpose, i.e STEM education) stands out on an application. If these programs or initiatives impacted you previously, wanting to give back to further give back to the organization weaves together a great story to draw experience from.

4. Volunteer for a Cause: Engage in projects that contribute to societal well-being. Just as engineering impacts lives, volunteering builds a sense of responsibility and practical skills.

Not sure this counts as 'experience'. Reading and engaging in the field during your 'off-time' shows that you want to be there. There's also a huge amount of information that you don't know (I don't care how much you do know, there's still a huge amount that you don't). The more you do know, the more you can bring to the challenges you are confronted with.

Don't wait for opportunities to fall into your lap, and don't let time pass. Go after what you want, and even if you receive a "no" for an answer, keep searching for new possibilities. I remember that I managed to get into an important research project and I also got an internship by literally "knocking on the door", introducing myself and asking if there were any opportunities for me. In both cases, there were no vacancies advertised. Mechanical engineering is a vast field with numerous opportunities, and you'll discover a role that suits you— maybe something you weren't expecting.

Find your dream job and read the description for it. Read through the responsibilities, requirements, and preferred qualifications and identify your skill gaps. Once identified, formulate a plan to fill them in. These actionable steps will keep you on track to landing your dream role.

Go design, build and test something - ANYTHING. You'll make mistakes all along the way and learn from them. Even a simple project like a towel hook can be useful in application of design tools like establishing requirements, DFMEA, fault trees, decision matrices / house of quality. Get through the entire process with testing. Go out of your way to break it. Imagine bringing this item to an interview and speaking intelligently about the design process you went through and what you learned. Much more interesting than, "What are your strengths or weaknesses?"

Learn to fix your bicycle....there's loads of great engineering stuff on that.... maybe even progress to building your own.....or at least just modify it to suit you better.

Mechanical engineering is all around us. Design and make something, get your hands dirty and see what is possible. Out of curiosity comes knowledge.
