What can you learn from a mentor with more experience than you?

We tend to look for mentors that are older, wiser and somehow that have a position we aspire in the future. However we tend not to look for mentors that are younger, less experienced but have what you do not, more digital literate, different view on how enterprise culture should evolve, younger perspective about goals and really adding that diversity we always tend to mention but not actively seeking. Young and less experienced people can be great mentors on giving you perpspectives that are crucial nowadays to grow your business, but senior people tend to forget.

I have found that working with a mentor that has more or different experiences than you do can help to give you a different perspective - for example a VP in Sales working with a Chief Strategy Officer gives you a different lens into your organization and can offer great advice on how to present effectively to a C-Level or how to gain traction within your organization. It can also give you access to others in your organization which can help further your career in many ways.

When looking for mentors I work to find the folks who are able to be vulnerable and are open to sharing among successes; their mistakes, failures and lessons learned. More often than not life and career hacks are layered in the failure stories that ultimately led a mentor to their success. When I think about the most impactful mentors for me, the folks that come to mind were confident in sharing both the ups and downs.

With a 40 years of industry experience and a mentor to 65 entrepreneurs and executives, I have found that mentoring is much more than what is envisaged. It is an art of seamlessly moving from counselling to training to Coaching to actual mentoring as the need be. People sometimes need counselling for behavioural issues like procrastination, risk aversion, team playing etc. Sometimes there is a need for training for closing the knowledge gap with some domain expertise or following up on some practical exercises as a coach.

Mentoring has been at the cornerstone of my career as a mentor now and a mentee for over one decade. The ability to guide people through the journey of professional options is what defines the value of mentors

Por experiência própria, já contratei um mentor pelos seus resultados e depois percebi que nossos valores não estavam alinhados. Passei por uma situação que afetou minha saúde e ele não compreendeu minha realidade enquanto mãe e profissional que precisava seguir em um ritmo mais cadenciado, focando na minha recuperação. O foco era no resultado em detrimento da saúde mental e da família. Enfim, um contrato que era pra durar 12 meses, durou somente 3, pois eu não conseguir avançar em uma direção contrária aos meus valores. Por isso, vale sempre avaliar esses dois aspectos.

Você precisa buscar mentores que já tenham a experiência que você deseja e que, principalmente estejam alinhados aos seus valores. Quando alguém me solicita uma mentoria, sempre marco uma conversa de 30 minutos para que possamos nos conhecer e entender se há alinhamento entre nós.

My grandfather taught me at early age to be observant and find the experts around you--expert is not tied to age or seniority. Be polite and ask questions and learn from them. I had no idea at the time that he was teaching me how to find a mentor.

Many people look for mentors based on titles and positions (the Tree). Well, this may help you find a mentor. First identify a leader in their field or perspective area. This means they have to produced fruits. Next you want to look at the quality of the fruit. - Do they have values that you would want to emulate.? - How did they treat others? - Are they passionate, strategic and deliberate about helping others succeed with no strings attached? - Do they have positive influence? Look at professional, association and professional/social organizations, attend conferences, and social gatherings. Observe from afar…judge the fruit not the tree. The best mentors find you.

Totally agree! Learn from anyone anywhere at anytime! In factor, I was given some mentoring by a young aspiring digital marketing service provider who is 18! Keep an open and growth mindset. As a Mentor myself, I need to continuously learn so that my tank is full to give. For ad hoc mentorship request, I am happy to help, but for more complex issues for deep diving, mentees may turn into paid clients. SMART goals help mentoring succeed in this partnership. S- Set Specific goals that are M- Measurable with that is A- Achievable to keep motivation high R- Relevant to the desired outcome & T- Time based to track results Linkedin is a fantastic platform for professional advice indeed, so treasure the connections for GROWTH!

The mentee initiates the first meeting/contact, where they establish whether the mentor would be able to meet the mentee’s needs. If rapport is established and both parties feel that they can work well together, they can take the conversation further. Initially, establish the boundaries of the relationship, probable length, when and how will they 'meet', ways of working, confidentiality, and most importantly: learning and development objectives. There is no fixed time that mentoring relationships are expected to last. This is entirely a matter for the mentee and mentor to decide and dependent on the mentee’s needs.

Remember that working with a mentor that is more experienced, doesn't necessarily mean that they are younger, of the same gender or cultural background - so assess your biases/expectations as you engage with new people. It's hugely rewarding to work with responsive people!

In my experience, working with a mentor can happen both formally or informally. Within my experiences designing formal mentor programs, it's always helpful to have some expectation management and set examples of how the dynamic may be, but not be too prescriptive. We have to allow people to find their own "grooves" and let things flow organically. With informal mentorship, the number one thing that has always served me is showing gratitude and respect for those who are willing to take some time with me and share their reflections. Mentoring can be bi-directional, so you should also be open to learnings both ways.

Time with a mentor is often quite limited and so it is always a good idea to come with a few topics and questions to optimize your time with them. I would start my discussions with a topical question; there are always hurdles and politics that they can either help solve or provide prospective on.

Many times my boss was my mentor and I was observant and learned the ropes of my position as fast as I could. Over time, I tried to make my boss' life easier by learning do his job and tasks that took his/her time. The idea being after I mastered my job with my crew try was to learn how things worked at the next level and it helped my boss be more productive in his role.

Tell people you'll give them badges, exploit the open source data they provide, train models and earn millions of dollars from it... Look, here's an example of a complete industry. These kids are so naughty. ^-^

A mentor who is more experienced than me can help me to face personal and professional challenges effectively. With his rich experience, he can always bring novel angles to emerging situations which may complement and add value to my approach. He will provide expertise to me in moments of crisis and will sharpen my skills to realise my organisational goals. With his inspiring examples, he will be lifting my drooping spirits and galvanizing me to wrestle with the imponderables of my career. Because of his seniority, he will be making available to me numerous networking opportunities which I may use as ladders of success. His feedback and suggestions for improvement will transform me into a better human being and professional.

A mentoria traz muitos benefícios para acelerar a carreira. Afinal, é uma relação com base em confiança, conexão e conhecimento. Por isso, é importante que o mentorado faça muitas perguntas ao mentor, realize as atividades que o mentor propuser e que ambos definam um plano de ação viável e realizável para que seja possível perceber a evolução e transformação ao longo do processo.

Para ser um bom mentorado é preciso: - Ter consciência do seu papel e obrigações; - Sempre acessar o mentor para partilhar dificuldades e também celebrar conquistas; - Entender que seu mentor não vai fazer aquilo que é sua obrigação; - Manter uma relação respeitosa; - Fornecer feedbacks sobre o processo, para evolução de ambos. Agindo dessa forma, o processo de mentoria tem grandes chances de êxito.

I always start from the place of "I am the dumbest one in the room" and go from there. Admitting lack of knowledge and sometimes, even a little ego stroking, can go a very long way especially when asking someone for anything, even if it is just time. Be willing to listen to advice, even if you disagree with what is being said. It is always fair to challenge an idea or statement, respectfully, and infact shows that you're engaged and actively listening to what is being communicated; more pointedly it shows that you heard the mentor and are thinking deeply about the topic.

Here are some ways: 1. Respect for privacy and confidentiality can be critical in a mentor-mentee relationship. Being trustworthy in this manner can solidify the relationship. 2. Follow through with recommendations from your Mentor. Demonstrate that you have acted on advice or feedback can be a rewarding experience for the mentor and will likely encourage further engagement. 3.Setting realistic expectations is crucial. Mentors can guide you, but they can't perform miracles. The mentee has to put in the work and shouldn’t expect immediate success or transformation just by having a mentor.

I will say one little thing : What you listen to and Who you listen to make you who you are. Listen with open eyes, ear, and most of all with an open mind.

Teachers (Mentors) love hearing about how their contributions have impacted one's life. For many mentors, watching their people grow is their value proposition. 1. Make sure you share with them about how their wisdom, guidance, and belief in you has impacted your life. 2. Don't fall into the trap of trying to please your mentor by only sharing your wins. They are exactly the advisors you should ask for guidance during times of adversity. 3. Show gratitude and find ways to reciprocate.

Um mentor mais experiente já trilhou aquele caminho e conhece as melhores estratégias. Por exemplo: você está buscando se desenvolver na sua área, mas não sabe o que fazer. O mentor vai te ajudar a construir uma trilha de aprendizado, como você vai lidar com imprevistos, mostrar a direção e te ensinar o caminho. Cabe a você continuar seguindo, com o apoio de quem viveu um processo parecido e vai te ajudar a acelerar os seus resultados.

Friends you don't need to lay eggs to comment on an omlette. Similarly a mentor need not necessarily be an expert from your field. As long as there's mutual trust and respect it's enough to begin.

Seek a Diverse Range of Mentors: Consider having multiple mentors with different expertise and experiences. Each mentor can provide unique insights and guidance. Pay It Forward: Once you've benefited from mentorship, consider becoming a mentor to someone else in the future. It's a way to give back and help others as you have been helped. Reflect and Assess: Periodically assess your progress and the effectiveness of the mentorship. Discuss with your mentor how the relationship can be improved and adjusted if necessary. Communicate Openly: If you have concerns, questions, or need additional support, communicate openly with your mentor. A healthy mentorship relies on good communication.

Mentoring is a game-changer that cultivates a growth mindset for both mentor and mentee. For the mentee, guidance from a seasoned pro is like a fast track to skill development and career advancement. They learn to embrace challenges, view failures as learning opportunities, and set ambitious goals. For the mentor, it's a chance to refine their leadership skills and gain fresh perspectives. They, too, learn to adapt and grow. This two-way exchange doesn't just impart knowledge; it fosters a culture of continuous improvement. The relationship becomes a wellspring of inspiration and innovation for both. In mentoring, everyone grows, and everyone wins.

There are two mentors from my career that immediately come to mind with a smile and reverence. In a curious way though, at the onset of both those relationships (in a way) I'm less certain I knew I needed a mentor. And at the same time knowing somewhere inside of me that I had to prove to them that I was worthy of them making the effort. I think the best way I could describe it was that I and they needed to see in me that I was destined for something greater than I was if I willingly listened, learned, and made the 'going the extra mile' effort to apply what was afforded to me. That happened in too many numerous ways over time to cover here.
