What do you do if you want to safeguard Enterprise Software from vulnerabilities using logical reasoning?

In today's interconnected digital landscape, safeguarding enterprise software has become paramount to ensuring the continuity and integrity of business operations. Conducting a thorough risk assessment is the cornerstone of any robust cybersecurity strategy, given the ever-evolving threat landscape. Safeguarding enterprise software necessitates a proactive and methodical approach to risk assessment. In a dynamic Enterprise Software environment, it's important to prioritize Security & Compliance. I once had a Product Owner who neglected critical vulnerabilities for months. We reworked the backlog and addressed all issues within a week. Use First Principles thinking to analyze your software's components and exposure. Always have a logical reason for your software's architecture.

Given that the risk is with "enterprise software" we in #cyber #security describe this #risk as 'Component Risk', hardware or software. #Data needs to be followed as means of its interaction within each component. I would start with an #assessment of the threats each component face. Then I would seek to find out any existing #vulnerabilities, for instance an on premise installed #software may only work on an out dated operating system which itself is vulnerable. This operating system is a risk. I would then prioritise risks based on their business/reputational/client impacts. A great tool to start would be to use something like Jens Rasmussen's Abstraction Hierarchy to distinguish: conceptual risk from real risk.

Unsurprisingly poorly configured #cloud is as vulnerable as out-of-date software. I've seen both cases; when (anyone with a credit card) elect to buy 'cloud' they do so on the premise that the cloud vendor is managing the operating systems or databases or even the application being installed 'in the cloud'. Not so, unless you have a detailed shared responsibility model, you'll need to patch (regularly update) the operating system(s) and associated databases as well as applications. Although an updated software may be less likely to be compromised, it will be exploited if operating system or databases are not patched. I suggest you start there, with the operating systems/#serverless technology used and assess the version release policy.

Common issues now include lack of hardening of USB ports -- root access to operating system can be obtained via a script executed from a USB port or similar interface. Here are few tips: 1. Administrators must rename the local 'administrator' account to something else. 2. Replace / disable guest user accounts 3. Disable local administrator account 4. Prohibit the creation of local administrator account on laptops/workstations 5. Assign all users to non administrative group such as 'users' group 6. Require passwords to be above 12 characters long with special characters included 7. Prohibit the use of past 3 passwords 8. Keep it simple; start with training around data protection. Not everything is logged; a small delay in processing, delayed POST/boot/loading of an application are good examples where monitoring will not detect vulnerabilities/back doors. A system benchmark needs to take place, freshly installed and with normal operation a deviation of performance / delayed/slow to load can be an indication of a system bottleneck but also something else taking place (data copy/move or encryption). Enterprises must deploy XDR based solutions, #Microsoft or #TrendMicro XDR are great but require a level of management. Virtual patching involves applying security policies and rules to network traffic to mitigate vulnerabilities in applications or systems without actually patching the underlying software. This is particularly useful for addressing vulnerabilities for which official patches may not yet be available or feasible to implement immediately.
