What do you do if your employees are worried about job security in the age of AI?

Having grown up in a working environment where we've seen the early PC's, mobile phones, WiFi, The Internet, The Cloud, and Work from home revolution, i would encourage to learn and understand the art of the new, not worry to much about the old.

Recent research from Princeton, the University of Pennsylvania, and New York University shows that AI will impact every part of the organizational value chain and every professional role. To stay competitive, I believe organizations must become AI-first businesses, providing all employees (sales, marketing, product, engineering, etc.) with opportunities to become early adopters of AI tools, learn, grow, and be creative. Investing time and resources in developing employees' AI skills is crucial for attracting and retaining top talent. The future is AI, and businesses that don't enable their employees the opportunity to seize the incredible opportunities it presents will fall behind! 💪

Address employee concerns transparently, emphasizing AI as a tool for augmentation, not replacement. Offer reskilling and upskilling opportunities to adapt to AI. Foster a culture of continuous learning and innovation. Create channels for feedback and reassure employees of job stability. Prioritize transparency, education, and support to alleviate fears about AI's impact on job security.

Employee & tech meltdown is a common phenomenon. The bright side: more AI (especially Gen AI) in 2023-2024 & employees can learn new technologies via online courses boom. Tips for organizations: 1. Adopt growth mindset: Crucial for organization & employees to have an open mind. Abilities improve through effort, learning, & persistence. It's about approaching challenges, processing failures, & adapting and evolving. 2. Continuous learning: Conduct AI hackathons, send employees for training workshops. Employees should study & clear AI certifications for confidence boost. 3. Collaboration & community events: AI experts should mentor colleagues. Participate in community events for a different view of the AI world.

It's understandable that employees might feel worried about job security as AI continues to advance. One thing I have found helpful is having open and transparent communication; acknowledge the potential impact of AI while emphasizing the company's commitment to upskilling and reskilling programs. Actually, I disagree with the approach of downplaying AI's influence. The narrative needs to shift from AI replacing humans, to people who know AI replacing those who don't. Additionally, people who know strategy + AI will outperform those who know AI, but lack the skills around "where" and "when" to apply them. Job roles need to be redefined to ensure problems are solved at the intersection of strategy + AI. Leadership vision, company culture, and change management practices will start to play a critical role for organizations to shift towards an AI first strategy.

As AI automates routine tasks, work with employees to redefine their roles. Focus on tasks that require critical thinking, creativity, and emotional intelligence – areas where humans retain a clear advantage. Identify opportunities for employees to leverage AI in their workflows.

AI models such as Chat-GPT and the like eliminate an important part of the work in some activities. However, the results often contain significant errors or the so-called "hallucinations" and must be reviewed by an expert. Then, knowledge and experience are required ...but, only to add a marginal improvement. Then, does it pay? Many could prefer a second-class product, as delivered by AI, because the knowledge required to add a marginal improvement is expensive. HMI must be redefined. It's not a matter of a machine going as far as it can and a human filling the voids. The expert must add knowledge to improve AI outcome AND to improve AI. For many, this will mean stepping out of their comfort zone, but that's where the future is.

Put your people at the heart of every role redefinition. I've seen countless technological implementations fail because they forgot the most critical component: the human element. Start with a deep understanding of your employees' strengths, aspirations, and concerns. Engage them in candid discussions about how they see their roles evolving, and actively listen to their insights. This isn't just about gathering input, it's about empowering your staff to be architects of their own futures. Involve them in the process of redefining their roles, and give them a stake in the outcome. They're more likely to embrace a change that they've helped to shape.

Having taught many Prompt Engineering classes in workshops within corporate enterprises, I know that the base information is important. But it cannot stop there. Call people out in the workplace as "Team AI" and start to pass out bonuses to those who innovate. Your best and most effective ideas will not come from a consultant, but from the inside of your organization where motivated employees will find ways to improve your internal processes.
