Traditional marketing benefits from the strengths of systems (Google Ads, Meta Ads etc), while growth hacking benefits from the weaknesses of the same systems. You need to know the tools in and out in order to ‚hack‘ them. That aside, growth hacking uses short cuts and doesn’t care much about T&Cs.

Traditional marketing is slower. It's cruising along, rolling out campaigns on a schedule. It takes more time and thinking to make decisions. Budgets are often bigger and therefore the ned to be more strategic in their allocation

Growth hacking and traditional marketing are not mutually exclusive. You can combine them to create a more holistic and effective marketing strategy. For example, you can use traditional marketing to build a strong brand identity and reputation, and then use growth hacking to leverage your existing customers and networks to spread the word. I often use traditional marketing techniques in experiments in order to identify the right target group and test value propositions etc. Once I found the way to go, I change the approach to unconventional, yet scalable, but way, way cheaper methods, namely 'growth hacks'

I've seen Growth Hacking function both, as a role within a larger marketing team (where the majority of the team takes on traditional marketing functions, and the Growth Hacker focuses on marketing experiments, evaluation and optimization), or as the team that actually takes the leadership role in marketing.
This is particularly the case in early-stage startups, where there might not be enough ressources for a traditional marketing department.
Instead, the Growth Marketing team focuses on growing the core metrics as quickly as possible, and also takes on "traditional" tasks, if they are crucial to the company's success.
Both approaches can work - the ideal setup depends on the exact structure and situation of a company.

The book "Hacking Growth" by Sean Ellis was great. I read it on the flight to and from Vegas for a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament.
In addition to that, CXL has a "Conversion Rate Optimization" course. Which CRO and Growth hacking are essentially the same thing.

One thing to keep in mind is that, "hacking" usually refers to taking certain actions to bypass barriers and achieve a quick (and often temporary) fix. However, "growth" of a company or product hardly happens overnights! There is no such thing as "hacking". It takes time and a lot of trial & error to find the sweet spot. "Growth hacking" is not the right term.
