What are the most effective strategies for a successful Public Relations internship?

When I had my first internship in the PR sphere, I implemented a holistic approach to the goals. Firstly, I created goals using the SMART framework. Secondly, I had an intro meeting with my mentor where I asked about the company's expectations of my results and fire workflow. Thirdly, I had one-on-one meetings every week, where we discussed my progress, current challenges, and possible decisions. These steps helped me finish my internship successfully and gain more knowledge, which I used all the time during my career growth in the PR sphere.

Learning from your mistakes is crucial, but so is asking for feedback. If you don't know what you did wrong, it's hard to improve on your own at the beginning of your journey. It's equally important to offer feedback to your manager on what you feel works well and what can be improved - often, they don't see the challenges with fresh eyes as you do. Constructive criticism can be hard to take if you don't have a good manager, so it's important not to get disheartened. Also try to look for a mentor outside your current company who can offer a different perspective on your growth.

When I was interning in the communications department of a scientific facility in the south of Spain I was as much a fish out of water as you can be. I didn't speak the language, was somehow an even worse scientist and had only just finished uni. Predictably, I made my fair share of mistakes. The important point here is not to make them twice. Set personal goals that align with the organization's objectives and take steps to achieve them independently. This will help with confidence. Confidence at work is crucial because it helps people take charge, make decisions, and handle challenges with self-assurance. When employees believe in their abilities, they're more likely to share ideas and actively contribute.
