What is the most effective way to create an innovative tech vision and mission statement?

Before you do anything make sure you have a real problem to solve with that tech innovation you are planning. As a VC my most frequent comment on startup pitchdecks was TLFM (technology looking for a market). In other words a tech solution for which there was no obvious need. I see the same fuzzy thinking in companies today. Worried about disruption, desperate to be seen to innovate, companies start projects without a real understanding of the challenge being addressed. Yes you need the right people (no the IT department is NOT the right place to manage technology innovation). Yes you need processes that are probably different from “the way we do things around here”. But first make sure the problem you are tackling actually needs solving.

Ian Charles Stewart put it perfectly. I’d only add, which I think is implicit in what he wrote, that you need to understand the problem too. Understand the problem and the context in which you are trying to launch your solution. Is there a clear connection? If not, think again.

Tech innovation, particularly for a custom software development company, encompasses the development of unique, creative solutions with well-defined USPs that address specific customer needs or industry challenges, often by leveraging emerging technologies and trends. A method I have found successful in the past to build an inspiring vision is to accept the input of your team. Have everyone write a vision statement and submit it to a central location. Combine the vision statements into a word cloud. What words are the most common? What does your team care about? Make sure to include the most popular words in the final vision statement. It is much easier to gain buy-in when your team already has skin in the game.

Your vision should be a bold and aspirational statement that paints a picture of the future you want to create with your technology. Use clear, concise language that outlines the desired long-term outcome, focusing on the broad societal or industry influence. Don't limit your vision to immediate technological advancements; think about the broader implications and potential disruptions your innovation could bring.

Explain how your tech will bridge the gap between the present and the envisioned future. Describe the core values, principles, and practices that guide your development and implementation efforts. Set clear objectives and milestones to track progress and ensure your mission drives practical action.

The mission MUST support and drive the more comprehensive, aspirational tech vision, YOUR FUTURE GOAL. Integrating the vision into strategic planning and decision-making processes and expressing it clearly and consistently throughout the business ensures that EVERYONE understands how their work contributes to this shared goal. INVOLVE EVERYONE!

Most of the time we tend to lean towards the shiny new tech without considering what problem it is solving for our clients/customers and business. Bringing stakeholders early in the process ensures that our choices have a direct or indirect impact for them.

After 6 years of B-school and 25+ years of innovation, I've never quite grasped the benefit of splitting a True North into a separate vision (a desc. of the world you'll create) & mission (a desc. of the impact you'll have). Either seems to do, as in either case, it's a guidepost to help your team keep goals, strategies, decisions, & actions aligned. In terms of *how* to create that alignment, there are two parts, & the first is easy: constantly ask, "How does this goal/strategy/decision/action help us achieve our vision/mission/True North?" The second is hard, and that's to be ruthlessly objective and skeptical about how you the answer. Because when it comes to alignment, "if it doesn't fit a little, it doesn't fit at all."

One of the most discriminating factor that segregates innovater from normal individuals is well organized plan and mission. This amalgamation of vision aligning with the goal in the form of paper is the mission statement itself with needs to have following objectives 💡: ✅ Engaging ideas from the team involved ✅ A roadmap of solving real world problems with technology ✅ Keeping all the updates of the rapidly evolving landscape so that the innovation is up to date ✅ How to make it more user friendly ✅ Keeping up with the trend and checking whether the goal is aligned with the vision or not Innovating something is not "cake walk". It requires a subtle plan with nuances detailing 🎯
