What is the role of courage in Extreme Programming methodology?

A lot of folks might interpret courage as “I can do it” or “I can speak up in a group” or “I am not afraid of anything” but keeping courage in the context of XP, I think it’s about leveraging your experience, your confidence in coding and most importantly admitting if you made a mistake and fix the piece or don’t be afraid to redo it right based on regression testing, peer feedback applying modernized approaches.

Well courage is required in literally anything we do in life. To ensure clean code is the focus of agile teams, they need courage to pursue the same as for Delivery Managers code quality may not be of paramount interest. Various stakeholders have various KPIs in the delivery process and focus is accordingly given. For developers code is sacred and to explain that unfortunately courage is required.

I think courage would be most applicable here within the high frequency interactions between development and business staff. It takes courage to put aside departmental politics while together focusing on the successful outcome of the product under development. The prize at the goal is a win for the business, and this helps facilitate the trust required. Courage is necessary there to keep going especially when it gets hard. This can be cohesive to everyday life and our workplace. Collaborating to better the overall organization and customers needs will always bring something positive in the end. Even when you are doing something alone, you can't do it all alone. On some level, you will need help. We must always listen so we can understand when we get help. The feeling of working alone can prove to be self sabotaging. If we have the courage to work with others, there is no limit in what can do. All it takes is two people to start a community of excellence and structure.

I think we often underestimate the term courage to collaborate. In any kind of project management framework be it Scrum or traditional approach, collaboration plays a vital role to get the things done. Collaborate to resolve any impediments, resolve any issues, clarify any questions/doubts, collaborate to keep the transparency across the team, collaborate with all the key stakeholders from understanding the project requirement to all the way till release of the project is the key of any project/product success.

Courage to constructive criticism. In earlier stages , I used to get offended by the criticism I used to receive. Then I started working on defensive mindset rather than progressive which affected my career badly . So be break free .

Try to understand why you shy away from bettering yourself; then reason with the fear of it. Why are you afraid? Balance the outcomes; if the worst case scenario doesn't seem that bad, then the next step is to follow through. It is much easier to do so once you've convinced yourself that no matter the outcome, you have gone one step closer to overcoming that fear. You may feel like others will scold you because of your opinion or trying something new to grow in your role itself. No matter the outcome, remember that you have a skill that you just need to take that leap of faith with to be better than you were yesterday. Consistency, resiliency, and persistency will take you far.
