What tools and techniques can you use to manage your workload as a UX wireframer?

Some designers don't create traditional wireframes today because of the degree to which design tools and design systems have matured. When it's time to design the UI, it may be more efficient to go straight to high fidelity mockups if you have an existing design kit. That said, there are other low fidelity, low investment approaches that can help you map out flows and screens. For example, I use a breadboarding technique described in the book Shape Up that allows me to move very quickly and validate alignment with stakeholders. Among the plethora of options, including Balsamiq, Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD, choosing one aligned with your preferences, budget, and project needs is crucial. A robust wireframing tool should offer features like drag-and-drop elements, templates, and libraries for efficient wireframe creation. Collaboration capabilities, including comments and feedback, are essential for seamless teamwork with both internal and external stakeholders. Additionally, the tool should support various formats and resolutions (web, mobile, tablet, desktop) and integrate smoothly with other platforms and tools, enhancing the overall prototyping, testing, and development processes.

I handle my workload as a UX wireframer by using helpful tools and techniques. I organize tasks and set priorities using project management tools like Asana or Trello. I use design software such as Sketch or Adobe XD to create wireframes. I communicate regularly with stakeholders and team members using platforms like Slack or Microsoft Teams to make sure everyone is on the same page. Develop a clear, step-by-step process for your wireframing. This might include initial research, sketching, creating low-fidelity wireframes, and then moving to high-fidelity ones. It's like having a musical score to follow, ensuring each note is hit at the right time.

Designers have many meetings. My day would consist of sessions for 6 hours with only a couple of hours to design. My favorite ways to manage time and workload: ❇️ Block off your calendar for "heads down" time. This is when you won't be pinged or asked to go to a meeting. This is your time to produce work. ❇️ Find your times of flow. For example, mornings to lunch are my most creative times. I have much energy to create. After lunch, I'm not as creative, so meetings are perfect for that time. ❇️ Be comfortable with saying no to some meetings. You should be a part of some meetings. For some meetings, you don't have to be. Ask for meeting notes and let you know if something is essential or if there's a follow-up.

Establish clear communication channels with clients or stakeholders. Regularly update them on your progress, discuss any challenges, and ensure alignment with project goals.

Communication is the key to success! Every team is different – some like to communicate via Slack while others would rather chat in Figma using the conversation and spotlight features. In terms of how often to communicate, it's good to check in with your team about what works best for them. Always be honest and transparent!
