You're in charge of keeping the audience engaged at a live event. How do you navigate transitions seamlessly?

Rehearsals with speakers and performers are essential, as they not only familiarize them with the schedule but also build confidence in their delivery. From a technical P.O.V , comprehensive checks of all equipment are must, along with having backup plans in place to address any unforeseen issues. By embracing this approach, you can significantly reduce the risk of disruptions, ensuring that the event will go smoothly and professionally.

In my experience, if you speak directly to the audience, rather than “at” them, you will keep everyone engaged. Get your eyes off the notes and be present in the room! Acknowledge the realities of the present moment - and use your sense of humor. It is the most human thing we have, and a great connector.

Never host a Zoom event without understanding all the features of Zoom technology. Knowing how to remove a Zoom bombers, turn off someone's camera, or mute someone's microphone is critical to success.

Magic is quite universal, without giving away too many tricks (lol), I usually get a very good understanding of the speakers and performers and what they do. I will customize by performing an effect along the same lines. Something that correlates easily. That gets the audience thinking where I need them to and helps me transition to the next speaker/performer.

Creating an opportunity for a visceral response takes your audience from being spectators to participants. Engaging through movement gives your audience a sense of that they are at the center of your presentation, not just on the edges watching you.

Timing. From the moment your crowd shows to the location, to sitting them down, introductions, change overs, key performances and the goodbyes need to flow. If you make the crowd feel like time is dragging, you have lost. Yes the content needs to be interesting, emotive and compelling, but if it misses a beat, in can make entertainment feel like a meeting that should have been an email.

Each and every audience is gathered to reach for something they crave. In a concert they want to see the performance of the performers as well as their top hits. See what your audience is after, give them to them and give them at the right time. You won't loose a moment of the attention, I promise.

Everyone human being has a great number of experiences to share. Use laughter, quick one liners or puns in correlation, tell a story, humanize yourself. Audience participation is key too. If I can perform an effect that gets everyone involved, it's showtime.

In our professional experience with over 25 years of event productions the visual aspect is better for transitions between sets and or performances in many cases. Watch the audience. Something called observational comedy works great. Number 1 underrated technique is "The dead pan look" If something goes wrong, be prepped to lighten the situation with a joke, but don't make fun of anyone in the process. Help pass the time, be in the moment and have a strong level of improvisation techniques.
