Participate in bug bounty programs on "Bugcrowd" and "HackerOne" for practical experience. Earn certifications from EC-Council, Offensive Security, ISC2, INE Security, GIAC, and SANS to boost your skills. Focus on "0 Day vulnerabilities" discovered daily, and address them promptly based on your environment and client needs. Combining continuous learning, practical challenges, and certifications keeps you ahead in cybersecurity.

Technical mastery aside, a Cybersecurity professional must possess excellent communication skills. Reasons: They have to deal with various organizational stakeholders, and not everyone is on the same page. Implying they must change their tonality, their voice, and their language as per the stakeholder they address. And, this is only possible when a cybersecurity professional has impeccable communication skills.

Communication skills and social skills are critical! Cybersecurity professionals must be good at explaining risks, solutions, next steps... Employees are usually the weakest link in the security chain. A cibersecurity professional with good communication skills will make employees our allies, while a cibersecurity professional with bad communication skills may convert our colleagues into enemies, making the risk much higher.

Here's the thing about "effective communication" in the cybersecurity world: it's not just about speaking clearly, it's about tailoring your message to the audience. Know Your "Customer": Is it the CEO, a fellow techie, or a panicked user? Each needs different info, and the same explanation won't work for all of them. "Storytelling" Beats Jargon: A technical deep dive is great for peers, but executives want the narrative – how does this threat impact our business goals? "I Don't Know (Yet)" Builds Trust: No one has all the answers in cybersecurity. Admitting that, then showing how you'll FIND the answer, is more impressive than bluffing.

Even though I also believe you need deep technical skill. Communication and business acumen is also required in today’s cyber landscape. Without the combination of these, it will be difficult to fully implement a successful cybersecurity program.

Given my experience in cybersecurity and collaboration with many leaders in the field, although technical skills is a must. Employers appreciate professionals who can assess risks and prioritize security measures effectively. A solid understanding of different threat vectors and risk management is essential. Also I consider the desire to constantly learn and discover new things to be a necessary skill, as the field is constantly evolving, especially given the recent developments in AI. And of course effective communication is key. Cybersecurity professionals need to collaborate with colleagues, convey complex information to non-technical stakeholders, and work well in teams.

The "So What?" Factor: Don't just present a vulnerability report. Explain what a breach would mean for the business: lost revenue, customer trust, etc. "No" is Sometimes Strategic: The best security isn't always the most complex. Sometimes saying "no" to a risky project is the most strategic move you can make. Learn the Language of Business: Can you explain ROI, risk appetite, and other business concepts? This is what gets you a seat at the strategy table. I realize it's to protect the business that relies on that network. This requires a different mindset, one that focuses on the big picture and understands how cybersecurity can be a driver of innovation and growth, not just a cost center.

As cybersecurity risks are always changing , the modus operandi of threat actors also keep changing so there is never a day when you can be confident that you have learnt it all and you are ready to take it all on. So be a continuous learner to prove yourself better among equals. When i say of learning, its learning on both aspects i.e. the changing threat landscape and also the niche solutions being offered for strengthening your cybersecurity posture. Hence, you need to be always in a learning mode to stay abreast of transforming threats and solutions space. Further, you also need to be open to learning about other niche technology say gen AI, Blockchain, etc as they and many other like them have strong interplay with cybersecurity.

My journey has taught me that the hunger for knowledge is what sets great professionals apart. I can't imagine a cybersecurity professional in my team without ethical standards. We need to be absolutely sure that we can trust in our cybersecurity team members!

I will conclude by adding certain qualities which will prove a colleague to be more suited for promotion then others. First is problem solving skill, i.e. the individual will be required to solve complex problem including team management issues and hence a person who is better at problem solving is better suited for next jump. I will look for qualities like empathy and leading with personal examples among all others. Other significant qualities to be considered are being result oriented, and proven skillset towards achieving organisational goals.

Beyond these qualities, there's the X-factor – that intangible something that makes you stand out. It could be your knack for creative problem-solving, your uncanny ability to stay calm under pressure, or your passion for making cybersecurity fun and accessible. In my career, I've found that blending humor with expertise not only engages but also educates. So, keep it light, keep it smart, and remember that even in the darkest corners of the internet, a little laughter can be the best defense. 🌟

Up-to-date knowledge should be demonstrated by discussing the latest threats and vulnerabilities, as well as their mitigations. Demonstration of out-of-the-box thinking through unique methods or tricks employed in offensive and defensive projects, tasks, or matters. Proof of research can be shown through bug hunting projects or registered CVEs.

Another important point is Adaptability. Being able to align security goals with the goals of the company, is something critical to our success. A person without this ability will only be able to perform well in the lower layers of the team, but cybersecurity senior jobs should be able to understand the situation and define solutions valid for both security and business. This could be included in the "Strategic Thinking" section, but from my point of view, strategic thinking is more useful for CISOs (top level in the company), while senior cybersecurity professionals should have adaptability when listening to their colleagues, analyzing the current situation, proposing solutions, defining compensating controls if needed...
