How can Plant Operations managers ensure their teams meet production and efficiency targets?

My experience say we need to focus on the following 5 key factors 1. Make Sure You’re Focusing on the Right Operations Metrics 2. Always Use Data to Identify Key Problems 3. Invest in Staying Up-to-Date With the Latest Technology 4. Focus on Processes Before Automation 5. The Key People Skill for Operations Managers

Meeting production and efficiency targets involves multiple factors. 1. SMART Goals: Clearly define targets; ensure they're specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timely. 2. Training: Equip your team with the necessary skills through varied training methods. 3. Communication: Promote open dialogue for role clarity and early problem detection. 4. Streamlining: Eliminate waste, reduce downtime, adopt lean principles. 5. Engagement: Foster a positive environment acknowledge the effort to motivate team. 6. Reviews: Regular performance evaluations help highlight improvement areas. 7. Maintenance: Regularly maintain equipment to prevent unexpected delays. 8. Tech Adoption: Use AI,IoT for real-time monitoring,forecasting,automating tasks.

My POVs; People and KPI. Production targets, should be aligned to the goals and objectives of the organization, likewise SMART. KPIs are connected and supported layer to layer. Letting them understand the whys of those targets might help them connect with their whys in the organization. The support of the leaders for the people who execute the targets matters. includes; Providing people the right skills and tools for the right tasks, providing them a psychological safe environment, and allowing them to speak up. Coaching and mentoring are valued as leader’s intervention. Instilling personal accountability across layers of the organization would reinforce the behavioral attributes, likewise accountable leadership.

To meet Production and efficiency, focus should not be on production but productivity. Output with less input.. Reduce WASTE, set targets, review them periodically, change directions if required but with same goal.

In my experience plant operations managers can ensure their team meets production and efficiency targets by implementing robust planning, regular performance assessments, fostering open communication, and investing in employee training and technology upgrades.

As per my Opinion, production targets and efficiency can be meet by implementing robust planning and communication, giving skills to the team . Positive attitude will make team comfortable and open to work . As a leader / Manager , we have to be Extrovert , outgoing and People oriented .

Proper skilled manpower and machineries always leads to better productivity.Along with this if the work environment is good,people always put their 100% effort to achieve the set targets and goal.

Implementar Lean Manufacturing está muy bien siempre que no se vea des de la dirección como una herramienta. Por ejemplo las 5s no son una herramienta para tener la fábrica ordenada, sino es la base para poder construir toda una estandardización. Si creemos en el lean como una herramienta pero sin que detrás haya la intención de adoptar la filosofía de lean, de encontrar la causas reales de los problemas, etc… lo que sólo vamos a hacer será crear frustración porque ls cosas no se hacen o no se sostienen por falta de una base sólida y luego empezamos a implementar medidas de control extra (que no dejan de ser una muda) y al final por considerar el Lean una herramienta más que una filosofía lo único que tenemos es tener más trabajo sin valor.

In my experience, blending lean, Six Sigma, and project management into production involves engaging teams to cut waste and elevate quality. We structure processes aligned with projects, aiming to boost efficiency and timely project delivery. Setting realistic timelines with buffers is key, and we apply lean, Six Sigma, and project tools for top-notch quality outcomes.

I would suggest a strategic approach by setting clear objectives for the team and step-by-step daily development which involves breaking down the goal into manageable tasks and fostering a sense of progress. Of course, effective coaching and guidance together with open communication to promote trust and full understanding of objectives are crucial . Trust is the most important for empowering team members to take ownership of their responsibilities. A well-balanced combination of goal-setting, daily development, coaching, and trust creates an environment for meeting production and efficiency targets.

Ensure to get Zero Losses in resources . Motivate and high morale of teams , division of work and get it accomplish in shortest time span.

Make things easier and better by following Lean Principles. Cut out things that not going to use, like extra steps or stuff you don't need. Involve your team in finding smarter ways to do things and always try to make improvements. This helps you do a better job with less wasted time and resources.

Collaboration goes a long way as this improves innovation as well. The more team mates rub minds together the better each individual becomes. Everyone thinks differently thus, the need to think together as a team improves the intellect of every member of the team. This in turn improves productivity.

My additional opinion is to get everybody's involvement. The hardest thing to do is make them believe that we must do this. We need to sell the idea until they believe. Then things will run smoothly.

Es clave que el equipo se sienta parte del proyecto que aporten ideas y su colaboración contribuya a conseguir los objetivos comunes, su motivación y confianza aumentará.

En lo personal, no tengo dudas de que ésta es una gran manera, muy eficaz, de que los grupos cumplan con los objetivos de producción con excelencia, sin forzar; sin sentir presión alguna, y que por el contrario, es la manera de dar valor al personal, haciendo ver que en ellos se deposita confianza. Como empleado de producción que he sido, para mí no ha habido mejor cosa que se me dé lugar al aporte para un mejor funcionamiento de los grupos de trabajo, al trabajo en sí que se está ejecutando; en tener la posibilidad de aportar ideas y que éstas sean escuchadas, valoradas y puestas en práctica, es lo máximo. Se siente una gran satisfacción el ser valorado, y esto hace que uno haga el trabajo como si fuera para uno mismo!

I am heading prd deptt of FFC. I can share my own experience. Last year, in 2023 we have achieved ever highest urea production with ~70k over than planned and ever lowest energy consumption by 1 mmbtu/ton urea lower than budgeted/previous values at plants. This we achieved with team efforts, good planning and team engagement. The milestone can be achieved 1st by splitting the tasks into sub tasks and measuring the outputs and setting the next goals. Professional experience helps to have better planning and directing the team efforts to right path. Teamwork and team’s motivation always play a vital role in achievements. Better Job’s planning and pursuance to sustained operation is also very important as operational continuity capacity factor

Make goals realistic and involve the people in the process. Set clear expectations, communicate the goal, measure to the goal in short increments and make performance visible. Relentlessly pursue waste reduction and elimination and recognize performance!

It is essential to define and agree upon KPIs, how they will be measured, and to establish a baseline. Analyzing root causes and creating action plans is essential to avoiding repeating the mistake. If the failure occurs again, identify the training needs. Create an environment that fosters learning. In order to drive the change, leadership must support and commit to it

Na minha opinião faltam os fundamentais de organização, tais como: - colocar as pessoas certas no lugar certo; - definir objetivos a longo prazo e a estratégia; - priorizar e alinhar: o que é urgente e importante tem que ser feito já; - Comunicação.

I agree with M.S.Dhoni (former Indian cricket team captain) regarding the achievement of targets and results. "Focus more on the process, if you get the process right, you will get the results." This mindset encourages the team to concentrate on their performance and execution, trusting that favorable results will follow when the process is executed effectively.
