How can you increase your chances of being invited back as a podcast guest?

Having a guest who has an idea of the audience goes a long way towards long-term collaboration. If the host shares an outline beforehand, add notes to show you read it and understand the direction of the conversation. Do some research about what media exists around the topic so that you can add context to the discussion. If sharing a personal story, make sure you are telling it in a way where anyone can relate. Think about what you would find interesting if you were a complete stranger listening to the interview.

First, be well-prepared for the interview by researching the podcast and understanding its audience. Engage in a lively and insightful conversation, showcasing your expertise and adding value to the episode. Be respectful of the host's time and follow any guidelines they provide. Share the episode across your social media platforms and express gratitude for the opportunity. After the interview, maintain a professional and friendly relationship with the host by staying in touch, providing updates on your work, and expressing interest in their podcast. Being a reliable, interesting, and respectful guest increases the likelihood of being invited back for future episodes.

If you are invited, be open, honest, and transparent. Podcasts are more intimate than a radio or TV interview, and your candor should reflect that. Find out beforehand if it will be edited, I tell my guests they can always ask me to take that out, and usually are more open afterward.

Preparation definitely helps to win half the battle. Many people will tell you to prepare stories, bring stats, cite examples. There's much more to it, and as a podcast host, here are 2 things that have helped my guests: 1. Mental preparation - preparing anecdotes that are USEFUL, ACTIONABLE and PERSONAL. Also, please come ready and excited about the podcast! Enthusiasm makes it worth the podcasters while too! 2. Physical preparation - Look good, feel good, do good. Be it an audio podcast or video recording, being comfortable and feeling your best helps to transfer positive vibes to your audience! Please avoid clothes and accessories that might make noises during the recording as well.

Make sure you're caffeinated :) A friend of mine only takes podcast interviews on Tues / Thurs b/c he has brain fog on Mon/Fri. Know yourself & work around this!!

Tell your story -- people respond to narrative -- and speak naturally. Most podcasts are not intended for tightly scripted talking points. Remember, this is not a hostile media interview, it's an invitation to get into a subject in some depth but also with breadth.

I have been a guest on over 400 shows, and have been invited back multiple times to several of them. In my experience, remembering that "you are a guest" is the most important thing as a guest. It is no different than being invited to someone's home. Know the rules and expectations. Do your research, and communicate with the host, both before and after recording the episode. My "secret" trick that I will use for most shows I am on, is I will always promote the host BEFORE I promote myself when the eventual question of "How can our listeners get ahold of you?" comes up. I will always ask that listeners give the show and the host a 5-star review, and to write in the comments what they like about the show or their favorite episode/guest.

Returning guests on my podcast have always first demonstrated their breadth of knowledge. Sometimes they'll suggest multiple broad topics they can talk about in the planning stage. Often more than enough to fill a podcast episode. Or it can be more organic. Having spoken with them on one topic, I get a feel they'd be good talking about another topic. And they're front of mind when I decide to cover that topic. If you're a guest who wants to get asked back you can influence the host. Don't be afraid to suggest multiple broad topic areas. Either at the planning stage or after the show airs.

This is the #1 thing - if you're valuable, hosts notice & want more of if (b/c their audience wants more of it) When I go on a show, I try to include anecdotal stories that inspire; facts & frameworks that empower & something that makes me memorable.

A great way to engage with the host is to begin the process BEFORE you're recording with them. Some tricks for doing this successfully include: #1. Listen to 3 recent episodes of the show. (Have a quote or highlight ready to share when you're recording with them!) #2. Listen for how the host refers to their listeners. (Then mirror that during recording) #3. Match the host's tempo/personality. (I.E. If they talk slower, you should too!) #4. Add a TON of value to the host's brand. Know their website, books, social media, podcast, etc. The more research you do on them, the more you look like a hero to them, and to their listeners.

As a podcast host, I prefer guests who interact with me. I love it when they: - engage in discussions instead of answering questions with canned answers - keep the audience in mind - infuse their personality into the conversation to make the show more interesting - serve the audience first

Two of my biggest pain points as a podcast host include: 1) Inviting a guest to my show... But have no communication or interaction following the interview. 2) The guest does not promote their episode To increase your chances of being invited back as a guest, I'd first suggest maintaining contact regularly with the host. The cadence of your communication is entirely up to you (meaning: You don't have to be excessively messaging them on a weekly basis). Second, I suggest making efforts to promote your episode of their show at least several times. The podcast host would be able to see your enthusiasm and sincerity in wanting to be part of their show or community!

Want to know an industry secret that IDK why it's a secret?? Well 2 things: (1) it costs money for a host to produce an episode, so... (2) Hosts really only want to bring on guests who can share their episode to a wide audience.

This is huge and so often forgotten. If you've taken the time to be on an episode and someone has taken the time to produce an episode with you on it, please share a link to the show once you know it's live. This also helps your expertise reach a larger audience than it would have if you only left it up to the podcaster to promote the episode.

This is a major key as a podcast guest. No promotion is bad promotion. Promoting a podcast you are a guest on is an exchange of energy. It supports all parties involved, while spotlighting your unique talents and perspective.

Have you ever heard the saying, "Out of sight, out of mind?" It's true. Even if you've been a guest on a show, if you don't circle back from time-to-time, you will likely not be remembered by them. When you follow up, follow up in a way that adds value! Here are three ideas: #1. Ask them if you can share the episode again. #2. Ask them if they're looking to connect with any specific guests that you be able to introduce them to. #3. Ask them what they're excited about with the podcast and if you can help share about that excitement. ^ The key, and trend, is that you need to follow up with the host in a way that adds value.

Networking with other guests builds community around the podcast. Checking out previous episodes and reaching out to participants about their experience can also give you an idea of what to expect. It can spark fresh ideas and help those who are uncomfortable public speaking feel supported.

Something that I've found helpful in order to be a "regular guest" on a podcast, is to simply enjoy the process, appreciate the work that the podcaster is doing (regardless if there's only 1 subscriber on the channel) and become a friend to and of the podcast. Listening to more pods, the best ones are those that seem to have a relationship spanning decades - a shared history and common vibe. 1. make friends and you'll be invited again and again. 2. Just ask to be on it.

Be prepared for their interview style and understand what the show is about. Be prepared to go off the interview questions. Do indicate prior to the interview what is off limits for you to talk about Promote the interview as well Build a relationship with the podcast team you may have to circle back Don’t be difficult there are so many that want to be in your shoes in front of the mic Don’t be afraid to ask for outtakes or other ways to help promote Do place the interview on your website with a back link to the interview Publicly and privately thank the podcaster for the space to talk
