This is a set of qualities that anyone looking up to you should be proud to learn from you.

Be unapologetically you – quirks, passions, and all. It's about showcasing not just your victories, but also the hurdles you've crossed and the lessons you've gathered from the stumbles. Letting your humanity shine through makes you relatable and builds bridges with those around you. In this genuine display, confidence and integrity naturally radiate, qualities that form the bedrock of effective leadership. So, embrace your uniqueness and let it be the spark that ignites inspiration in others.

This holds great significance for me: authenticity is your unique, secret ingredient, a special sauce that only you possess the recipe for. No one can duplicate it, and no one else's version can ever match the flavour of yours. You alone have the ability to serve it up. By sharing our vision people understand and feel comfortable joining and being next to us. It's like having a mutual purpose and working out way towards it. If at some point we get distracted, try to use shortcuts or go after other goals, like money or fame, they loose their trust in the company.

Life is too short to keep our knowledge to ourselves. Sharing, coaching, mentoring gives us an incomparably good feeling. Helping others is the easiest way to get a feeling of satisfaction and also know that tomorrow it might turn around and be helped by the same people.

Assisting others within your capacity is one of the most effective approaches in any professional environment I can think of. Surely, both you and I have been newcomers in our respective fields, eagerly hoping for others to guide us with patience and understanding. This mutual empathy not only fosters a supportive work culture but also helps in building lasting professional relationships.

Talk about Vulnerability and Failures - While everyone likes a story about a win, it is equally important to highlight how failures have been instrumental in your personal and professional development. So, share the story about the moments of vulnerability or instances where you made mistakes by ending them with a line or two about how you overcame those. Celebrate achievements, no matter how small, will offer a big morale boost- hard work pays off and that progress is being made.

As team lead, I walk the talk by demonstrating the following to my best abilities -> appreciating each team member as a unique individual -> recognising members could be better than themselves in certain skillsets -> demonstrating how the tough work is done -> taking responsibility -> giving credit -> embracing opposite views

Action inspires more than motivational speech. I once had a leader who made the point to speak to everyone in his 60+ strong team when he came onboard. When I it was my turn, he said "Judson, I'm not great at Marketing but I'll do my best to give input." Since then, week after week he would give his perspectives on how to improve my output but left the final decision to me. Other than being on vacation, he didn't stop giving his views. His consistency and humility was very inspiring to all of us, more so than the standard pep talk employees get at monthly townhalls.

Leading by example is not limited to leadership roles. Anyone can lead by example in their personal and professional lives. By consistently demonstrating the behaviors and attitudes you want to see in others, you can inspire positive change in the world at large!

Feedback is a two-way street. Not only should you encourage feedback from others, but you should also actively seek feedback for your own growth and development. In my career experiences I have transitioned from fast food management to lead line/prep cook to top of my class as a Cosmetologist to Master Stylist and Salon Manager to In Home Care Manager to Store Shift Lead and Pharmacy Assistant to Total Loss Auto Insurance Claims Specialist to Head Cashier in one of the busiest grocery stores in Washington. Moral of the story. Don't be afraid to branch out to completely different fields to broaden your skill set and keep your ego grounded. While also achieving un-expendability. Being a great leader also means being an exceptional student in every aspect. Forever learning and leveling up! You can't remain a leader if you lack a variety of wisdom and experience for fear of trying something new. 🙂
