In my opinion, problem-solving skills are not only related to technical issues, we may also have personnel problems, such as the relationship between "employees and company owners". So we should learn about "organizational behavior" and "employee behavior". Of course, this issue may also be raised in the "conflict resolution" section.

Mastering manufacturing engineering involves a blend of formal education, hands-on experience, continuous learning, and skill development in areas like technical proficiency, problem-solving, project management, and effective communication, while staying abreast of industry trends and prioritizing safety.

Solving problems is something that’ll manufacturing engineers see every day! A lot of tools can help us such as Pareto, 5W2H, root cause analysis, 8D and etc. But the most important thing in my humble opinion is LISTEN the operation, they know better than anyone the process, an idea is always in a brainstorm with a operator to help you.

You can know how to use all the six sigma tools available but if you don't have people skills or true support from upper management and owners those tools mean nothing.

As a starting point, it is recommended to identify all those technical skills relevant to the role and create an individual development plan (IDP). A simple way to give structure to the plan is by classifying the skills in areas of knowledge so those areas work as pillars to the IDP; the aim is to be able to include and exclude skills according to the professional needs but keeping a structure that helps stay on the path. At this point, it is important to determine the levels of expertise for each topic. Levels can easily tell what will be the initial point and what would be the maximum level to be achieved with the objective of having clear targets and an accurate projection of the time required to master the skills proposed.

Mastering technical skills requires you to step out of your comfort zone. Think outside the box and not be afraid to make a mistake. If your not making mistakes early in your career your not learning. Learning CAD/CAM. 3D printing is a base along with math etc... Best advice... get your hands dirty, ask questions and keep your mind open to consistently learning something new.. only way to grow.

Technical skills are probably the most important arsenal in the kit bag that we have to carry to shop floors. Good knowledge about machining, tools, jigs, processes, etc can answer almost any question that arises in any situation. Start with 1 machine, 1 tool, 1 process, and 1 program, once that is established, deploy horizontal deployments to multiple machines, different types of cutting tools, different process requirements, and more. Try to acquire all your answers by Why-Why analysis, this way you will know the root answer to all your doubts.

Mainly Technical Proficiency &Engineering Fundamentals, Deep understanding of engineering principles, materials science, and manufacturing processes. Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software. Process Improvement and lean manufacturing are always an asset for a quality manufacturing outflow. In my opinion creativity skills are the most needed skill in manufacturing.It helps us in many ways and at many times when we are not able to solve problems by conventional technical methods.

The machine shop I work in is fairly large and we have a team of 10 CNC programmers. We have a high mix of parts which requires the programmers to constantly optimize or redo previous programs. Recently the manufacturing engineering team suggested an AI powered programming tool. This was met with anger and contempt from the programming team. They thought they would be replaced completely. Despite their feelings, the programming lead took the initiative to become the subject matter expert on this software. This could be your own manufacturing facility or maybe a supplier's facility where you can see and learn what they do. The more you see, the more you learn - everyday's a school day in Engineering!

“Get your hands dirty!” Experience means participation, means feeling what it is, means going through it and living what is like to make a product a reality. All of the skills mentioned can’t be acquired by reading about it or taking a course. You need to do things, break things and learn where the action happens.

From my experience, none of the other areas will result in success if you do not get directly involved on the manufacturing floor. This may include “ getting you hands dirty” by doing the actual work. Doing the work allows you to understand the real job and it’s challenges, build relationships, elevate your problem solving skills, understand the details of the product and understand the product. Too often there is a hands off approach, creating a lack of understanding of the product and the people actually doing the work that pays your salary. Get involved.

Doesn't matter at what level you enter the discipline you know nothing, and your doing an apprenticeship (learn by doing)... pre university, post bachelors or masters whatever, get on the tools and learn.

As manufacturing expert everybody expects to not only your technical skills but also your leadership capabilities, in order to meet unforeseeable challenges everyone watches how you are dealing with any kind of problems, those could be technical or non-technical situation. There are many external factors may affect manufacturing i.e. supply chain, sourcing, legal aspects; so leadership comes with proven experience with capabilities to influence most external and internal unexpected situation.

You have to live it. Engineering isn't something you get involved in just to pay the bills. If the natural interest isn't there; if you're not fixing or making things in your spare time you'll never be a great Engineer.
