The use of topology optimization is an excellent choice to reduce weight without reducing strength. There are specific software capable of showing the regions that do not receive considerable loads so we can remove material. Despite being very effective, it could be costly in terms of parts fabrication, which perhaps would require additive manufacturing due to the final result be an organic-like shape quite difficult to reproduce from CAD using conventional machining processes. Depending on the nature of the application, the material selection could be a drawback since metallic alloys suitable for 3D printing are very expensive and require laser-based devices, so a huge amount of energy is also required.
