How can you use thought leadership to align your team around a shared strategy?

To inspire the team to embrace a new vision, as a thought leader my strength is take them visually to engage in my thought journey. Use vivid imagery, descriptions that evoke emotions. A great presentation will help, immerse the team in a filmmaking way, be their brains and be their eyes. Use words, sounds, music and let them experience the future.

One thing I have found useful working with various teams, you have to really understand their value to the organization and collaborate effectively to ensure their contribution is valued and respected even if it’s offering minor impact compared to other cross-functional teams. As a thought leader, it is essential to really explore the potential of your team members and really nurture their attributes this way it can align to their career development and organizational success. Everyone has a “why” they join a team or work. Discerning this is a valuable business skill of an effective leader.

Thought leadership can be a powerful tool to align a team towards a shared strategy. It would be important to 1. Define the shared strategy 2. Identify individuals within the team who possess deep expertise and knowledge in relevant areas. 3. Encourage thought leaders to share their insights, ideas, and perspectives with the team. 4. Encourage continuous learning and growth within the team. 5. Give thought leaders the autonomy and support to drive initiatives related to the shared strategy. 6. Companies often have two distinct purposes that operate in parallel. The first, often expressed in politically correct and appealing language, is the outward-facing mission or purpose that resonates with their audience and stakeholders. However, alongside this public-facing purpose, there's the underlying and often more pragmatic true purpose, which is fundamentally about creating value for their stakeholders, which primarily translates to generating profits and financial growth. Striking a balance between these two purposes is a challenge companies face, and their long-term success often depends on how effectively they align their public image with their financial objectives.

Articulate your purpose in a simple and inspiring way. Purpose must be easily understood and conjure some vividness to be easily recalled.

You must know your audience in order to adequate your communication: but you must always be clear and transparent about the strategy you are asking them to follow; share your previous experience if you have some; let them know about the expected goals and give them regular feed back. And ask them to do what each of one of them do better, so you're focused in one thing only: to get thing done, with success.

It's crucial to understand the cultural background of your audience. The approach to delivering information, level of detail for high-context and low-context cultures, composition of participants, and timing of presentations - all these seemingly obvious aspects differ in various parts of the world. You will only be successful when you genuinely "know" your audience and adapt your approach accordingly.

Identifying different audiences for strategic messaging is a crucial aspect of effective communication. To do this, one must begin by conducting comprehensive audience research, which involves segmenting the target audience based on various criteria such as demographics, psychographics, behaviors, and needs.

It's important to know your audience so that you use words, examples, and role models familiar to them. To understand the inner needs and wants you need to spend time harnessing a relationship and develop a deeper understanding. Asking them is not enough.

Stories are the most powerful tool to narrate your company's past within the frame of your current strategy, and of showing how that strategy was shaped by your experience. Storytelling is also the most effective way of taking ownership of your narrative towards internal and external stakeholders, and of conveying the shared knowledge obtained in the process.

It's important to recognize that different audiences may include customers, employees, investors, regulatory bodies, partners, and the general public, each with their unique priorities and expectations. Storytelling is the most persuasive format as we are prone to logical flows and will easily remember them. Also, a story stimulates our natural curiosity and can be used to reframe a conversation.

Everyone and no one is a thought leader, the answer should be we ask for just thought and builds. To do this we need feedback but one thing I've noticed time and time again is people cant let go of their idea to the strategy... Everyone need to let go of their lego bricks first in order for feedback to be taken on board. it all starts with mindsets and behaviours first

Feedback needs to be actionable rather than empty complaints. There is a difference. And opinions must be rooted in past experience and/or evidence and data. For example: “I don’t like this” isn’t useful feedback. Try instead “I don’t like this approach because when we tried it last year on this other project we missed our goals because we didn’t account for X. I suggest we modify this approach to account for X to ensure we hit our goals this time”.

What's important is to show the change of circumstance (they always change), the set of actions you undertook to mediate the risks and the outcomes up to date. Do so even if you think you are going slower than expected or do not seem to have many results. Why? Because strategy execution performance should not come as a surprise in a year or so. Stakeholders must be aware of progress, challenges and alterations taking place as it would allow them to assess the impact on the overall business or its parts and make an informed decision. Transparency makes all the difference here.

Then having the discussions on how to execute and practice these strategies, giving everyone the opportunity to have a say and ask questions where necessary. Clarity, purpose and continued support to see it through is important for the strategies to work. Also to review and be ready or open to make changes where necessary, as externalities may change the situation and the strategy doesn’t serve its purpose or make sense anymore.
