How do you become a police officer?

Becoming a police officer varies depending on state and jurisdiction. There strict requirements will vary greatly but applicants should take time to review each department’s websites and literature. From there, typically applicants should expect to fill out extremely detailed information packets/applications. Generally, there will be a written and physical test. After scores are compiled, often there will be board interview(s) and an intensive background check. Due to these factors, transparency, integrity, and consistency are critical. Beyond the hard details, applicants should be ready to speak to their character, experiences, and purpose. Truly knowing their “why” and charging forth with determination will be of utmost importance

Find a mentor with experience. Be sure to read pre-testing materials first and pay attention to what you are being tested for. The KSAs or Knowledge, Skills and Abilities should be articulated in your answers. Testing is comprised of the ability to read, comprehend and use critical thinking to solve problems. No one expects the candidate to answer like a police officer. Just read or listen to what is presented and act on the facts. Being too passive or too aggressive are bad strategies. Answer the question presented. Think safety. Articulate hazards. Be decisive. Always take time to review your answers but don’t be afraid to change them (but remember, your first answer is usually the right one!)

Education and athleticism are needed to become a police officer. Start with a high school diploma or equivalent, some agencies require a college degree. Take criminal justice or similar courses to learn law enforcement basics. Since hiring requires background checks, have a clean criminal record and good morals. My understanding on being a police officer is to take exams written and physical. Other methods taking drug test, psychological exam,health assessment,background check,interview, and job offer.

While I could write about how to become a policeman I would suggest each person who wants to be an officer read the requirements of the AOR they are looking to serve. While most are pretty much the same as listed in this post they may vary some. So to ensure you get the right “gouge” as they say in the NAVY just go to the department you want to join. It will save you a lot of time!

You can't be afraid to learn on your own. Don't depend only on your agency to provide training. You can access high-quality training that will make you a better officer by looking online or by paying your own way for training that will help you learn and grow. Be a servant leader in your organization and be willing to do what no one else will do. Doing the right thing when no one is watching will build a habit of serving others that will provide you with good examples during an interview for a special assignment or promotion. Finally, get to know the people in your agency who currently work in the position that you aspire to. Ask them questions and give them opportunities to give you pointers and teach you.
