How do you select startup co-founders?

Finding a co-founder is not easy. You have a vision and u need someone who loves and believes in what you do. But you also need someone, who is somewhat like you, thinks like you but not exactly like your personality. Someone who compliments your strength but can contribute in another. So who is this person? Someone who understands the market, potential and mainly the gaps, because this is exactly what you’re pitching!! Where can you find them? Network, network, network!

Drawing from my own experience as a former founder, I believe that finding the right co-founders is largely about chemistry. It's akin to a marriage, where collaboration is key. You'll face disagreements and make sacrifices, but there will also be victories to celebrate together. It's crucial for each co-founder to have skills that complement the others and to share a common vision for building your idea into a successful company. Further, it's essential to ensure alignment in core values and long-term goals, as well as a mutual commitment to resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges. Look for someone who brings a diverse perspective or skill set, which can be a catalyst for innovation and problem-solving.

I believe that co-founder's values and mentality should be in line with founder's But the specialties, skills and behavior styles of both should be complementary and not in line. In this case, they can cover each other's weaknesses and strengthen their strengths

When selecting a partner - life or business there are 3 crucial selection filter I would use: 1. similar values - the cost of acquiring business, treating employees, how you treat the environment are fundamental to any business. These are the pillars on which everything rests. These need to be in sync. 2. same vision - unless the vision is the same, the speed, urgency and effort cannot be the same and hence it becomes critical for a good working relationship and for the business to succeed 3 complementary skills - an owner needs to wear multiple hats, with complementary skills the number of hats one has to wear can reduce and energy can be channelised

Finding a co-founder can feel like dating - you've gotta kiss a lot of frogs before finding your prince or princess. I've been to those awkward "meet your next co-founder" speed dating events (and actually even succeeded in those). But after networking far and wide, from incubators to friends-of-friends, I realized you can find gems in unexpected places. Maybe you meet at a niche industry event. Or a driven developer tearing it up at a hackathon. I struck gold with a chance encounter that felt like anything but - we just instantly clicked. So keep an open mind and heart throughout the search. You never know when or where that serendipitous startup spark could happen. It likely won't be forced. But when it's right, you'll both just know.

1. Finding a cofounder you know in your existing network is best. This is not easy and not always possible. 2. If you're going to network to find a cofounder, accept that you can only get 30% of the information about a person from first impressions. The other 70% of character traits you will find out over time. It is a gamble. 3. Do your due diligence. Founders are outlier people. Make sure you don't pair up with a sociopath or psychopath. This will surely lead to misery. There are tests that can evaluate this. If your partnership doesn't work out because of individual differences, that is fair game. 4. Take the plunge. Invest in your cofounder relationship. Find a happy medium between too many and too few disagreements.

Now that I've defined my co-founder criteria, it's time to network and explore potential matches. I'll use online platforms, attend events, and connect with incubators or accelerators. Apart from the obvious "capability and chemistry" type tests, you have to select a founder based on the skill and expertise they bring to the venture. Investors like to see founders' teams that are constructed of people who each have something real to bring to the business. Those who have domain expertise in the industry that you are looking to enter or disrupt, and not just the person who is brilliant and you went to university with! I always advise people to find co-founders first and become friends with them later!

Drive is what matters most. A couple of questions that can help you evaluate that: - Does your co founder want to win as bad as you? - Is your cofounder willing to sacrifice his/her's personal life for a period of time? - Is your co founder willing to fail a lot? - Can he or she take it? - Is your co founder aware of the weight and importance of the problem?

You need to work on projects together to see if there's potential for a fit. It will provide a sample insight into what the future relationship could be like. Even working together for a couple of hours can be enough to know it's not a fit.

In my experience, the best way to select startup co-founders is to listen to your intuition. Sometimes you need cofounders with different skills in order to have more skills within the company. Other times you need a cofounder with the same skills in order to perfect the product or service. Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all model. Selecting the wrong co-founder can lead to one of the 2 most common causes for a startup not to succeed... ( lack of money and cockfighting) If you don't know your potential co-founder you can mitigate the risk if you collaborate in small projects and observe how all parties feel.

Co-founder conflict is the second biggest reason for startup failure. A lot has been said and debated about selecting a startup co-founder, evaluating, negotiating, reviewing. However, I feel it is not that straightforward, it can not be that objective. You have to take a leap of faith and trust your instincts. Of course there are hygiene factors: passion and persistence for the problem you’re solving, hard skills especially if you’re looking for a tech partner, intent and honesty and the hardest to find ‘patience’. That being said, after a point you still have to trust and go for it. Once your startup scales, adding co-founders is not the same. That I feel is more transactional and objective.

Not everyone eventually is a fit, or suitable to become a co-founder, depending on commitments, skill sets and a variety of factors. What starts off as a conversation to be cofounder, might end up leading to becoming a founding team member instead. It is crucial to have that difficult conversation early on. Cofounders should not hold equal shares as well, and someone will has to be the bad cop when the time calls for it. Everyone can be cordial and cohesive, but too much discussions and "democracy" in the early stages of building a startup could lead to paralysis.

An important part of the selecting process is negotiating and coming to agreements with possible co-founders. Clearly state duties, obligations, and the allocation of equity. It's critical to communicate openly about contributions, expectations, and decision-making. Achieve equitable conditions through negotiation that are in line with each co-founder's pledge. Transparent talks that lay a strong basis help avoid misunderstandings and promote cooperative and fruitful partnerships.

Some folks look at this part as a necessary evil. The legal documents, shareholder agreements, vesting schedules, can all feel like a drag. Lawyers are expensive and oftentimes, these documents feel like a pre nup, outlining what happens in a worst case scenario. Who wants to think about breaking up at the beginning of an exciting relationship? But there's a way to reframe it. Instead, look at it as an opportunity for alignment. As you discuss expectations for your working relationship, you'll learn about each other's work styles, what makes each of you different, it can foster greater closeness and understanding, and ultimately set the team up for greater success — and enjoyment.

Focus on building trust and alignment with your co-founders first. A handshake might be worth more than a hundred pages of legal jargon.

It's all about ensuring you have the right people on board for each stage of the journey, even if that means making tough decisions along the way. Don't hesitate to review and adjust your team as necessary.

It will not be a one-day decision but will take time. You have to learn to adjust with your co-founders in different situations and make decisions that will help your team as a whole. Learn from each other and complement to ensure you can deal with situations in a better way.

One thing I've found helpful is the marriage metaphor. A good marriage takes work in order to remain healthy, and a good partnership in business does too. Work on the relationship regularly. Have a business retreat where the co-founders go away together for a weekend or a week to work on the business. Don't just work in the business.

“Recruiting” a co-founder is hard. Sometimes your cofounder chooses you or you’ve shared mutual interests for a long time. It’s important to have clear lines of responsibilities for each person and to communicate well and honestly. And of course to take and give feedback without it becoming too personal for the sake of the greater goal.

All great technical points, but co-founders are not like other team members. Their most important role in my mind is to inspire and motivate you and others. Start ups are hard work, requiring tenacity and passion often far above what is required from other business work. Whether they bring complementary skills or great work ethic or a key network or values (all of which are good and valuable) the key point is whether they drive the vision you have together and can sustain it until the business can mature to a level where others can pick up the mantle and drive it. Founders are founders, not always management executives for the long term. But initiating and sustaining inspiration and motivation through the start up phase is key.

Prioritize character and shared vision. Seek a co-founder whose values align with yours, someone you can trust through challenges. Look for diversity in skills and perspectives to build a well-rounded team. A successful partnership rests not just on a great idea, but on the foundation of mutual respect and a shared journey towards your startup's goals.

I've formed 5 business partnerships in the last few years and 3 are still thriving through difficulties. Choosing our startup co-founders is tricky, as we need to balance what we need NOW & evolving in the FUTURE. 3 things have been the contributors to a healthy business partnership: 1) Complementary Skills (strengths & weaknesses, loves & dislikes, people are likely to grow where they are naturally great at, don't force it!), 2) Clear Roles & Responsibilities - that of course will evolve overtime as the business will grow 3) Have a tight Code of Ethos (that expresses our values into behaviours) e.g. practicing voicing difficult things openly, calling people out in a supportive way, as well as treating everyone & their ideas with respect.
