In my experience, the income approach is probably the least reliable and valued (and therefore least useful) of the valuation approaches with a startup, exactly because the enterprise is a startup and so it’s quite difficult to project with any high degree of confidence what the future revenues and profits will actually be. Founders tend to be overly optimistic about the inputs - which is not a necessarily a bad thing from at least one perspective, because investors want the founders to believe in the company and in themselves, but it can lead to unreliable and overly optimistic DCF results without some realistic tempering of these inputs.

The sensitivity of the inbound assumptions of these models means that, unless the logic and reasoning behind the assumption can be understood and verified, founders can utilise these figures to report ridiculous self-valuations, particularly in pre-revenue and pre-profit states. This is definitely only recommended for mid-later-stage startups.
