The very first step in handling a difficult situation is understanding people. You must have a foundation of trust, the person must know you are a professional, man or woman of integrity. All conflicts must be handled in a neutral manor. As one who has learned from the other end, you need to remove all emotions and pre conceived notions of the persons in the conflict and handle the situation as an isolated incident. The biggest protection you can have is stating local course rules, what happens in a tie breaker, when handicaps are pulled, etc. Preparing your rules document prior to the tournament should have a mindset of you being in court protecting the defendant. Don’t leave room for gray area! And lastly always handle with grace and in a non defensive manor! Who cares who wins?!

In my experience over the years I’ve seen everything from rules discrepancies, poor conduct from a player and between players, homeowners calling the cops on players for peeing behind trees, and everything in between. As the operator of the event, the ball is in your court and you are the governing body. Having a hard card for players is a SOP, a rules official onsite is an added bonus and communicating any irregularities or special procedures before teeing off will help mitigate any potential problems. When all fails and you are stuck in a predicament that you can’t seem to figure out; lean on the head professional of the host facility and/or call your local PGA Section Office.

Conversation should always remain calm and respectful from both sides even if one side doesn't understand a rule or situation. Take the time to explain and do your best to educate them on what the rule is so they understand why the rule is in place. Sportsmanship is the basis of all sports but especially in golf. It is imperative to maintain the atmosphere that golf has been established on.

Have plenty of "officials" out there and that includes volunteers, committee people and staff that know what is going on and also are empowered to make decisions. Make sure the game being played is clearly outlined and understood and deal with any issues quickly and entirely. Remind people always that this is a fun event, for the benefit of the charity and to network and have FUN! That is hat I have seen gets most lost.

What has worked for me well over a couple of decades that I have been at the course : - start off on a pleasant note before tee off. - let the other 3 in the group know what 'nuisance' you carry while playing the course. ( we all do ) - request them politely to bear with you on certain aspects of your game ( for eg : not to stand in line of your putts / chips ). - seek out and ask the group what bothers them while playing. showing empathy goes a long way in avoiding conflicts. - lastly, this approach helps in life as well as golf.
